Tollcross Primary School

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Tollcross Primary School is a mixed non-denominational primary school on Fountainbridge near Tollcross in Edinburgh, which is notable for offering the only Gaelic medium primary education in Edinburgh and the Lothians. In 2005 the school had 238 pupils in 11 classes, including 118 children in the Gaelic medium nursery and primary classes. Class sizes are typically 15-25 children, with several classes being composite, e.g. children from primary 6 and 7 are together in one class; the pupil to teacher ratio is 20:1. Children can continue their education in Gaelic at James Gillespie's High School in Edinburgh.

The present school dates to 1912, previous to which the school was known as the Lothian Road Public School, sited where the Usher Hall is today. The school buildings comprise eleven classrooms, a dining room, a hall, two libraries which double up as a computer room and music room, and a multi-sensory room. The school has three playgrounds with climbing frames. A Gaelic-language nursery and a community centre, Tollcross Community Education Centre, are on the same site. Kenneth Neal is the Head Teacher.
