[edit] Origins
[edit] Phase 1
Shiina had always wished to work with a band while working on her last album, Karuki Zamen Kuri no Hana. Then, she looked for members of her backing band and selected them. In August, 2003, the band which serves as the parent body of the Tokyo Jihen later was formed for Shina Ringo's solo tour Sugoroku Ecstasy started in autumn. The tour band was introduced as Tokyo Jihen during the tour for the first time, featuring guitarist Hirama, keyboardist HZM, drummer Hata, and familiar bassist Kameda.
After the end of the tour, she announced that she stopped solo career, and took part in her backing band, Tokyo Jihen as a member of them.
晝海幹音 (Hirama Mikio), or Micky, released two mini-albums from the indies label as a solo musician, and, on the other hand, he had participated in the band "peppermints kiss cafe" as a guitarist at that time. Shiina Ringo had met him by a certain audition. She decided to look for him, and she just employed him.
H是都M (HZM, H ZETT M) had already come out from the major label as a member of the Japanese jazz instrumental band "PE'Z" of five-man groups.
刄田綴色 (Hata Toshiki) had struck the drum as various musicians' session musician and tour musician. Moreover, he was also a drummer of the band of Shiina Junpei, her elder brother.
亀田誠司 (Kameda Seiji), whom Shiina Ringo calls "Shisho" (=master), was already famous as a producer and music arranger of plural musicians and a session bassist then. He knows Shina Ringo before her debut, and has supported her since her debut.
The real names of Hirama and Hata are "平間幹央" and "畑利樹" respectively, but, Shina Ringo named the stage name to them, using the Kanji which is not usually used as a phonetic equivalent, without changing pronunciation.
On July 1, 2005, keyboardist H ZETT M and guitarist Hirama Mikio left Tokyo Jihen. HZM returned to his duties as pianist for PE'Z and Hirama returned to his solo career. It was decided that they withdrew from the band before "dynamite!" tour started.
[edit] Phase 2
Shina Ringo lost the guitarist and the keyboardist, and began to look for new band members again.
She began visiting music clubs to look for the musician who could play the keyboard instrument. She decided to invite 伊澤啓太郎 (Izawa Keitaro) who was an acquaintance of HZM after all. Shiina was going to give a stage name to him, but he refused it and named him "伊澤一葉" (Izawa Ichiyo) by himself. She found 長谷川きよし (Hasegawa Kiyoshi) at a certain club at the time. His songs were in her mother's record collection, and she also liked them. Two of them will play together taking advantage of this opportunity.
On the other hand, the search for guitarist ran into difficulties. She invited some guitarists, but she was declined by all of them. They might have disliked considering them as her backing band. She was troubled and invited 長岡亮介 (Nagaoka Ryosuke) / 浮雲 (Ukigumo) who was her acquaintance for some time in her band. He was a member of the band of her elder brother and Hata before, and he also participated in the making of her album once. He refused participation to the band first, but finally accepted her request.
In September 2005, keyboardist Izawa Ichiyou and guitarist Ukigumo joined Tokyo Jihen. After this, the period of former members came to be called 第一期 (Dai-Ikki Phase 1?), and the period of current members came to be called 第二期 (Dai-Niki Phase 2?).
