The Hokubei Mainichi, renamed the Tokutomi Mathematics Contest, is an annual mathematics contest held in the San Jose State University in California in the United States. A chance for math fanatics aged 12 to 18 to gather, the Hokubei occurs in Mid-March. It consists of two divisions, a Junior Division for grades 7-9 and a Senior Division for grades 10-12. Each division consists of twenty challenging math problems, and one tie-breaker. The tie-breaker is usually a proof.
The score is the number of problems correct, not including the tie breaker. In the event of a tie, the tie-breaker is used.
Plaques are given to the top three scorers in each division. Besides these scorers, the top three scorers in each grade receive prizes as well. In 2003 they received gift certificates.
