[edit] Macedonian Slavs v. Macedonians

Todor, I am confused. What do you want on the Macedonian Slavs page? Your opinion really is important and I would like to hear it. Are you in favour of calling this ethnic group Macedonians or Macedonian Slavs? I can assure you that either way, no anti-Bulgarian, anti-Greek or even anti-Eskimo POV will be included. If the change ever takes place, it will be because the available NPOV evidence (ie other encyclopaedias) suggests it. Tell me, if Encyclopaedia Britannica, the Hutchinson Encyclopedia etc (the whole list mentioned on Talk:Macedonian Slavs) call these people Macedonians, why is us using that name according to Wikipedia policy so POV? REX 17:48, 11 October 2005 (UTC)

I probably hadn't expressed myself clear enough. I don't actually have an opinion on the topic, if Macedonians want to be called Macedonians, then let this be so. Just Bomac was denying the existence of other points of view (not mine) with this "real name". I mean, Dutch might call their land "Nederland", while we might prefer "Холандия" (Holandia, a version of Holland), and Czechs have lierally translated the former to "Nizozemsko". Nothing has a "real name", and Greeks might actually insist on "Macedonian Slavs". That's what I'm against and what I was targeting, accepting "Macedonians" as, like, the only possible "real name". / In short, let the article be called "Macedonians", all right, I'm cool with that. The reaction of Bomac was what upset me. Nothing else. / → Тодор Божинов / Todor Bozhinov → Talk 18:59, 11 October 2005 (UTC)

I know that Bomac can be rather excitable at times, but he doesn't mean ill to anyone. It's just that given that almost everyone else behaves that way on that talk page, we shouldn't take his reaction out of perspective. Anyway, I understood you wrongly, sorry. REX 19:05, 11 October 2005 (UTC)

That's all right, anyone can get excited, and besides, Macedonia is a very intense topic for us in the Balkans. Actually, now I had a further look on the discussion and Bomac is in fact just one of the many who've got beyond the acceptable form. It's nothing to worry about, he just needs to ease a bit. → Тодор Божинов / Todor Bozhinov → Talk 19:25, 11 October 2005 (UTC)

Wow, that's so kind of you! I really appreciate the barnstar and I'm certain I'll be contributing even more in the future. As the Wikiportal Bulgaria is what actually embraces most of my work here until now, I hope it would develop into something quite successful indeed. Also, what I really would like to do is unite the Bulgarian community on the English Wikipedia through a notice board, for example.

VMORO 15:44, 4 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Better wording (definite article)?

Hi! On the Macedonian language page, concerning the definite artcles(s), you replaced:

whereas standard Bulgarian only has the basic (unspecified) form.

with

whereas Bulgarian only has the basic (unspecified) form, although other forms exist in Bulgarian dialects.

Could you explain why you think this is a better wording? Do you have specific dialects in mind? I suppose that almost anything Macedonian exists in some western Bulgarian dialects (just like almost anything Norwegian exists in some western Swedish dialects), but is it really necessary to repeat that all the time?

Thank you for the explanation. I must say I'm surprised by this point of view. Maybe you're right. Personally, I think that if you take time to specify that any "unique" feature of standard Macedonian actually exists in some Bulgarian dialects, that is a way of implying that Macedonian is a Bulgarian dialect. Similarly, a lot of typical Bulgarian features exist in Torlakian Serb dialects, but I don't think anybody is trying to pinpoint that each time they attempt to characterize Bulgarian by mentioning these features.

Anyway, the matter is obviously unclear, so I'll leave it there.

11:40, 7 February 2006 (UTC)

14:04, 7 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Past or Present Tense?

Hi I saw you edited my translation of Lyuben Karavelov by mainly transforming my verbs into past tense. In Bulgarian history books there is a convention called "present historic tense" (segashno istorichesko) and I believe it is also used in the English language. Can you point me to English guidelines on this issue? ~ User:Cryout

--Cryout 19:41, 7 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] How flattering

I am very flattered that you liked my picture so much. I took several pictures that I think are very good (if I do say so myself). I have not got around to uploading them to Commons yet but I will. I thought Shipka Pass was beautiful and it would be hard to take a bad picture of the Balkan Mts. I emailed several pictures to Essjay because he was helping me understand the religion. That was one of the random scenery pictures that I send him and he liked it so much that he asked me to upload it. Since you like it so much I will be sure to upload more now. As an aside, are you familiar with OrthodoxWiki. There is not a lot on Bulgaria, and I am going to try to do some work there as well. [edit] Question

After all, you seem like a bit of non-nationalistic person. Well, most of the Bulgarians I know are "hardcored nationalists". I want to ask you (if you don't mind, of course) what do you think about Samuil's kingdom - was it Bulgarian, Macedonian, Serbian etc. kingdom or was a kingdom of agregate of people who were speaking the same language in the same territory, and had not yet develloped their feelings for nationality? Bomac 12:29, 18 February 2006 (UTC)

I, personally, don't support the national-based thesis about kingdom of Samuil. My oppinion about it is that in the Middle ages there were no nations. If you travel with a time-machine in the past and ask the people in King Samuil's kingdom (according to me): "What is your nationality?", they will answer: "Slav" or "Christian". You see, even the modern bulgarian theoretician Alexander Belan claim that even today there are people in the villages (in Bulgaria, Macedonia, Serbia...) who, if are asked in court about their nationality, answer that are "Christian" or "Slav". I think that this has connection (or, at least is a consequence) with/from the past. BTW, there are claims that Samuil's kingdom name was nor Macedonia, nor Bulgaria - but Slavinia.
And about Basil II - my opinion is not only that "Bulgarian" had other meaning in that time, but also that Basil II was from the thema "Macedonia", located in the area of today's Edrene district in Turkey (The Byzantine Macedonian dynasty). That's the reason some say that he was called "Macedonian", too. Regards -Bomac 13:51, 18 February 2006 (UTC)
Well, the Venetian diplomat Yovan Gjakon, in the oldest Venetian chronicle (of about 680 till 1008, from the time of tzar Aron and his brother Samuil), describing the conclusion of Venetian doj (дож) Peter Urs about sending his son in prison in the Byzantine Empire, says: "After a while, Yovan (the son of Urs), which was firstly in prison in Zara (today's Stara Zagora) escaped first in Slavinia, and then went to Italy".
It is persumed that in the island of St.Achiles (in Prespa Lake) there is a script in which the name of the Samuilo's Kingdom is inscripted, but, it is not researched yet. Bomac 17:41, 18 February 2006 (UTC)
Read the Bitola inscription FunkyFly 18:44, 18 February 2006 (UTC)
Yes, I've red Bitola inscription already. It is very well known in Macedonia. But, I don't want to repeat myself about it's meaning.
Other thing - I really don't know about Slavonia. As far as I know, this land was always known as Slavonia. And, Zara (Zadar) was in Croatia (or Dalmatia) then, if my history knowledge serves me well. And about a possible mistake 'bout the letter - yes it is possible, but there are other scripts where "Slavinia" is mentioned. Bomac 12:11, 19 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Antactic places

Hi. I notice you are putting some articles into the newly created Geography of Livingston Island category - good work! You'll find there are _lots_ of articles that will fit into that category Apcbg has created lots of such articles, so his contribution list is a good source of articles that may fit. I'm in the process of copyediting them all into a wiki form - I'll make sure I add your category to new ones that I create. Kcordina 16:44, 20 February 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for your note. I have been adding the bulgarian-named places template to the articles as I copyedit them. Any other articles by Apcbg will be copyedit'd by me at some point, so I can add the category as I do them. If you work your way through the ones with the template (ie. ones I've already copyedit'd) and I'll do the rest as I copyedit them. That we should avoid duplication. And yes, I agree we also need a category for greenwich island places. Kcordina 16:57, 20 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Re: New Category

Hi Todor! At this stage I would rather allocate my valuable time resource to contributing new and improving posted articles, maybe I'll turn to the category aspect a little bit later. The present category "South Shetland Islands" -- introduced by Kcordina who is doing a great wikification job indeed! -- is more neutral; as you have already noticed some of the articles in question refer to Greenwich Island not Livingston, and there are a couple from Alexander Island too. The "geography" label in your "Geography of Livingston Island" category would seem a mite narrow to me; toponymics, history and culture (Antarctic; world; of various nations) are also involved in various degrees. While some of the articles are fairly simple, others go into greater detail and sophistication (e.g. the Livingston Island article). Furthermore, if you have a "geography" category then one would expect to see a "History of Livingston Island" category too, but that would more appropriately be a single article rather than category; what I mean is that certain asymmetry is being created by the new category. Anyway, it's just an opinion. Best, Apcbg 18:50, 20 February 2006 (UTC)

I think the "Geography" category is a valuable one for the right articles - clearly its not applicable to all of them. Also, an article can (and should) be placed in more than one category so the bigger articles can be put in extra ones as well. Obviously the category won't be used for Greenwich island, a similar category should be created for that island. Kcordina 09:30, 21 February 2006 (UTC)
Okay folks, you know better. And thanks Todor for his nice words about my contribution. Apcbg 12:47, 21 February 2006 (UTC)

Hey TodorBozhinov,

I have an important question to ask. I recently uploaded this picture thinking that it is John of Rila; however, a commons user thinks that the image is of God the Father. I was wondering if you could help me figure this out. Click here for the image talk discussion. [edit] Portal:Macedonia

Hi, I always thought that Bulgarians are good friends of Macedonians and have an understanding and sympathy regarding our name and nationality (just to mention that Bulgaria was the first country that recognized the independence of Macedonia and it was done under the constitutional name, we have similar languages, music, culture etc…), but, unfortunately, I was probably wrong…Bitola 11:20, 2 March 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for your opinion, my opinion that I expected better understanding at least from Bulgarian editors also stays, but I cannot force anyone (neither I wish that of course) to change his mind. I also keep my opinion that every article related to my country should be named simple, with the country real name: Macedonia (Republic of is just a prefix that your country is using as well, but jet, your portal is named with portal:Bulgaria). I do know that the term Macedonia is misleading, that is why the Macedonia (disambiguation) page exists, just we should name that page correctly (with the (disambiguation) suffix).

--Latinus 17:35, 14 March 2006 (UTC)
—Preceding unsigned comment added by 87.246.10.24 (talk • contribs)

[edit] St. Kliment Ohridski

Your renaming/redirection of the article on the Bulgarian Antarctic base has created numerous discrepances not only in the English Wikipedia (where you could follow the links and possibly make amendments) but also in a number of other web locations where the links will now lead to the wrong article. Such changes should better be undone. Apcbg 13:54, 18 March 2006 (UTC)

No mirrors; there are various websites (unrelated to the English Wikipedia or any Wikipedia at all) containing the link
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Kliment_Ohridski
which used to lead to the Bulgarian Antarctic base article, and which have been made invalid by your intervention.
It's not a problem of certain websites like you say -- it's a problem of their users; if their failure to access the Wikipedia article on the Bulgarian Antarctic base is of no relevance to you then fine, you may be satisfied with what you are doing. Originally the name 'St. Kliment Ohridski' was unoccupied, with the other article being 'Clement of Ohrid' or something, and the external sites were linked to a valid address; that you call it 'badly-chosen' is just words, fact is there had been no practical problem before you created it. I am not interested in further discussion apparently leading nowhere.

[edit] Edit summaries

When editing an article on Wikipedia there is a small field labelled "Edit summary" under the main edit-box. It looks like this:

Edit summary text box

The text written here will appear on the Recent changes page, in the page revision history, on the diff page, and in the watchlists of users who are watching that article. See m:Help:Edit summary for full information on this feature.

When you leave the edit summary blank, some of your edits could be mistaken for vandalism and may be reverted, so please always briefly summarize your edits, especially when you are making subtle but important changes, like changing dates or numbers. Thank you.

[edit] Bulgaria templates

Hello again! I saw a few templates regarding Bulgaria (such as {{Provinces of Bulgaria}}, {{unesco-bg}}, {{Cities of Bulgaria}}) and thought it useful to suggest a couple of things for your consideration which can greatly improve the appearance and appeal. 1) Bulgaria has a beautiful coat of arms; it can be placed in the top-left corner of the templates. 2) the national flag of Bulgaria has a white band at the top. Placing the flag on a white background gives a kind of impression that the flag as only two bands (green and red), which I think is not quite right. Would like to know of your thoughts. (you may want to have a look at this as an example.) Cheers! --ΜιĿːtalk 06:02, 27 March 2006 (UTC)

[1]. == Changing to {{tl| from == I [http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User%3ATodorBozhinov%2FBulgaria_free_image_resources&diff=48211709&oldid=38310082 changed] the template links on your subpage [[User:TodorBozhinov/Bulgaria free image resources]] to {{tl|tl}} so people can click the templates while still being able to easily copy them. Please revert the change if you prefer the original method. ~~~~

  • Hi there. I saw your message and the discusion about the project on other contributors' pages. I'm reluctant to sign up under it. For one I use wiki mainly as a source, not so much as a place to write for others. The reason is that I lack the understanding on issues that interest me, in contrast to users like VMORO for example, and I may do more harm than good, if I get involved. I will follow the development of the project though, and I will try to contribute towards its goals. Not very actively though, as I'm not really here that often. Best regards--- Trunchanin 18:21, 15 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] City/Town Page Template

Todor, I'm going to be working on a number of Bulgarian city/town pages pretty soon. I was wondering if you know of any "City/Town Page Template" or anything that sets a particular standard for such pages. Let me know if you do; any help you can offer is appreciated. Thanks! --Kassabov 04:55, 13 April 2006 (UTC)
