[edit] Todd Shipyards
I'm not sure what takes precedence here, but it seems like the soccer team was probably named for the shipyard, and is not nearly as notable as the shipyard. I've looked through the history the company gives, but it doesn't note a name change. One item from the fact sheet says "Todd Pacific Shipyards is a wholly owned subsidiary of Todd Shipyards Corporation." Marketwatch says Todd Shipyards Corporation ticker:TOD "operates the Shipyard through a wholly owned subsidiary, Todd Pacific Shipyards Corporation 'Todd Pacific'." I'm not sure how to fix this, but maybe there should be 3 pages. Todd Shipyards Corporation for the corporation ticker TOD which owns Todd Pacific Shipyards, the actual shipyards in Seattle and historically other areas and this one to disambiguate and/or Todd Shipyards (soccer team). The soccer team is definitely a minor player in this story since it is likely named for the shipyard. --Dual Freq 00:38, 17 October 2006 (UTC)
- This article has little or no business importance whatsoever. It is recorded in wikipedia for its global sporting significance in so much as to say that any club that has played at the highest level of its home nation's soccer championship is noteworthy as a wikipedia article in itself, even if that nation does not regard soccer as a major sport. You are quite right in saying that the soccer team were named for the shipyard and in order to represent the shipyard in sporting circles. At the time of this team's formation soccer was marginally the second most popular team sport ahead of Football which is why a shipyard choosing to form a soccer team over a football team would not have been strange in this era. Soccer self destructed during the 1920s in a series of internal disputes and over inflated wages being paid to lure players from Europe, which couldn't be maintained in front of attendances between 5-10,000 per game and football reaped the benefits.
