[edit] Characterization
Toby is characterized as being a smart student at Degrassi, and is sometimes looked at as being a "geek" of sorts for his like of computers and anime. Awkward at times, he's only had one girlfriend (Kendra) in his seven-season run as a character, although he has tried on several occasions to date other girls. He is first introduced to the series in season one as a 7th grade student.
He was the best friend of the late J.T., and was the last person J.T. spoke with before J.T.'s encounter with his murderers. He was also the only friend of Rick before the school shooting in season four. Toby is friends with Liberty, Manny, and Emma, although his relationships with the latter two have waned over the series.
Toby lives with his father, step-mother, and step-sister, Ashley. He is Jewish, and it is revealed in season two that his grandparents died in the Holocaust.
[edit] Character history
[edit] Season 1
After Emma has an unfortunate encounter with an online predator, Toby, Many, and J.T. inform Emma's mother, Spike, and teacher, Snake, of the meeting. After this incident, Toby develops a crush on Emma, although a relationship never forms.
Also in season one, Toby has trouble adjusting to life with his step-sister Ashley, so to annoy her, he convinces J.T. to run against her in the up-coming school presidential race. When the possibility to J.T. winning the election increases, Ashley pays J.T. to drop out of the race. After this incident, Ashley and Toby decide to be mature and respect one another.
[edit] Season 2
In season two, Toby's eye is caught by Kendra, whom is later to be revealed as Spinner's younger sister. The two eventually begin dating, however Spinner's protective personality proves to be a problem for the couple. After Toby stands up to him, Spinner eventually allows Toby to date Kendra. The couple faces more trouble when Kendra feels suffocated by Toby's attentiveness. Also, Toby feels pressure from J.T. to have sex with Kendra, so he buys condoms should the occasion arise, however upon hearing of this news, Kendra breaks up with Toby, citing that she's only 12 years old and has no interest in sleeping with him.
Also in this season, after being teased, Toby decides that he wants to be like the very popular Sean, so he joins the school wrestling team. To drop a weight class, he attempts to lose weight by taking laxatives and abstaining from food. Because of his poor eating habits however, his eating disorder causes him to pass out during a match. J.T. and Ashley help him overcome this problem.
[edit] Season 3
When J.T. beings to hang out with Paige, his popularity increases, leaving best friend Toby behind. After Toby learns that J.T. had a wet dream about Liberty, he threatens to tell J.T.'s new friends about this unless J.T. lets Toby have lunch with them. However, after J.T. makes fun of Toby, Toby reveals J.T.'s secret. Still jealous over J.T.'s popularity, Toby sets out to prove he's cool and decides to hack into the Degrassi grade system to change Jimmy's grade. However, this backfires when he accidentally adjusts Jimmy's grade to an 8888%. Mr. Raditch discovers Toby's ploy when he finds that Toby has logged on under his name and has meddled with the grades. To save himself, Toby rats Jimmy out, and loses cool points when Jimmy tells him he's "100% fake."
In a Breakfast Club-style episode, Toby gets stuck in detention with Hazel, Sean, Ellie and Jimmy. The group has a lot of fun that day together, and during a game of Truth or Dare, Hazel is dared to kiss Toby. Toby stands out as the geek of the group, but as the kids spend more time in detention and with each other, Jimmy realizes while not necessarily cool, Toby is dependable, especially when he takes the blame for the group to Mr. Raditch.
[edit] Season 4
After being ditched by J.T., Toby becomes friends with the school's outcast, Rick, and he becomes the only real friend to Rick. During the shooting, Toby pleads Rick not to shoot anyone, only to have his requests ignored. Following the shooting, Toby and J.T. become friends again when Manny reminds the latter of how Toby had always been there for him.
[edit] Season 5
When Toby learns J.T. has gotten Liberty pregnant, he does his best to advise and help him out. The two nearly have a falling-out when a money-desperate J.T. first demands Toby lend him some cash and then insults him, but Toby is there for him after he overdoses and lands in the hospital.
With Liberty in the middle of her pregnancy and refusing to talk to J.T., Toby is stuck between them, working with Liberty on the school council, but remaining friends with J.T. at the same time. He secretly gives J.T. various details about Liberty's pregnancy progress, but is discovered when Liberty is asked by the principal about stepping down as class president. Liberty's water breaks in Toby's Bubbie's car, but he calls the hospital and paramedics arrive in time. He is with her and J.T. when she gives birth at the hospital.
[edit] Season 6
Degrassi begins a feud with Lakehurst High, and J.T. sets up a fight between the two schools. Toby doesn't want to fight, so J.T. tells everybody to leave before the fight begins, however Toby is then beat up by Lakehurst thugs and has to wear a cast and a neck brace. J.T., feeling guilty about Toby's injuries, vows to get revenge.
Even though Toby pleads with him to stop, J.T. is still angry at Lakehurst and he is attacked by a Lakehurst rival. Outside Liberty's birthday party being held at Emma's house, J.T. is stabbed with a knife. After being discovered by Liberty, he is rushed to the hospital. The doctors can't help J.T., he is pronounced dead, and Toby is greatly affected by this news.
After J.T.'s death, Toby attempts to help Liberty deal with his death by taking her on what he calls "a mini vacation", but things get turned upside down when Toby ends up kissing her. Soon Danny and even Manny get a sense that something is going on between him and Liberty, and Toby confesses to Manny that he likes Liberty. Liberty soon discovers the truth about Toby's feelings for her.
At the winter dance, Toby is voted Ice King and remarks that J.T. would be proud, which is a reference to when Liberty jokingly remarked that J.T. would never imagine that Toby would be voted Ice King.
[edit] Season 7
After Lakehurst has a fire, the students of the school are forced to attend Degrassi, something Toby is very uneasy about after J.T.'s death. With his pent-up anger, he creates a podcast of his feelings of the situation and sends it out to the student body. After being approached by Liberty about this and after Toby takes a visit to J.T.'s grave, however, he makes another podcast stating that although the students of Lakehurst are now in the halls of Degrassi, they are strangers that aren't friends yet. After making this, he is approached by former Lakehurst student Johnny, who threatens to fight Toby, but Spinner intervenes before anything can begin.
Also in season seven, Toby begins tutoring Holly J., who is failing math, in exchange for Dance Dance Revolution lessons. Although the two discover that they have feelings for one another, Toby breaks it off when he Holly J. denies her feelings in front of her best friend, Anya.
