Tobias Mullen (4 March 1818 – 22 April 1900) was a Bishop for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Erie in Pennsylvania. Bishop Mullen, who was consecrated as head of the diocese on 1868-08-02, oversaw a period of rapid church growth. By 1884, Erie, Pennsylvania had five Roman Catholic churches, including St. Patrick's Pro-Cathedral with its 3,000 parishioners, plus many church-associated schools, St. Joseph's Orphan Asylum, St. Vincent's Hospital, and Trinity Cemetery. [1] [2][3]
Mullen was born in Ireland to Irish parents.[4] Mullen arrived at the Port of New York from Liverpool on 1843-12-11 aboard the Queen of the West. Mullen served for some period of time as a priest in Conemaugh Borough, Cambria County, Pennsylvania. [5]
Mullen returned from a trip to Europe in June 1870. [6]
