To My Surprise is an experimental rock band, referred to as a side project of Shawn Crahan, a member/founder of nü-metal band Slipknot. Originally called The Ornge, The band changed its name to To My Surprise for major label debut. The band had a long line of influences including The Monkees, John Lennon, Pink Floyd and Jim Morrison. The members were Brandon Darner (a percussionist who briefly toured with Slipknot and currently plays guitar with the Envy Corps) who was put on vocals and rhythm guitar, Stevan Robinson Jr. was put on lead and bass guitar, and Shawn played percussion, wrote most of the lyrics and took care of the artwork. All band members hail from Des Moines, Iowa. They released their self titled debut in 2003, produced by Shawn and Brandon and with Rick Rubin as executive producer. The album received little interest due to being released around the time of Corey and Joey's side projects. The band was later dropped by Roadrunner records. Their CD can be downloaded on itunes.
To My Surprise were currently working on a 7" release with two new songs and in February 2006 and later will record a the second album full-length album, consisting a new line-up: Dorothy Hecht (Lead Vocals), Jarrod Brom (Keys & Guitar), Paul Thompson (Lead Guitar & Vocals), Wade Thompson (Bass & Vocals) and M. Shawn Crahan (Drums & Vocals). The band is looking for a new record label and a producer for this album. The group issued 3 new tracks in early 2006, notably Sad Fingers (featuring new female vocalist Dorothy), Jump The Gun and Battleship, which were a nod to the older TMS material. The group is notorious for updates and playing live concerts as they have removed all the newer pictures and tracks from their Myspace, and have been only known to have played the SXSW 2006 festival and a few Iowa shows, as pulled out of lot of festival dates (namely Download Festival). There is now talk that the band may have broken up, and been recruited for other projects, as no newer material has been made.
