[edit] History

The TNA X Division Championship, originally known as the NWA-TNA X Division Championship, was created on June 19, 2002, during the second show promoted by TNA, for their newly-created X Division. TNA promotes the X Division and the X Division Championship as "wrestling reinvented" and views it as the innovative side of professional wrestling, whereas the NWA World Heavyweight Championship (now replaced with the TNA World Heavyweight Championship in TNA) was promoted as the "traditional" side to wrestling, representing prestige and history.

On May 25, 2003, Chris Sabin won the WWA International Cruiserweight Championship, unifying it with the X Division Championship making the X Division Title a world championship as World Wrestling All-Stars (WWA) closed after that show.

[edit] Belt designs

The original belt had the NWA TNA logo and had a simple sans-serif "X" on the center plate. The logo was maintained even after the belt was changed in 2003. A new design was unveiled on May 16, 2007 to coincide with the creation of three new TNA titles. The new belt is larger with a more rounded faceplate, the current TNA logo, an "X" in the shape of the TNA logo, and the word "Division" through the middle of the "X".

[edit] Current champion

The current champion is Petey Williams, who is in his second reign. He defeated then-champion Jay Lethal after cashing in his Feast or Fired briefcase on the April 17, 2008 edition of iMPACT!
