User talk:Tlogmer/List of planets in Futurama

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The animated television series Futurama is set in a time when galactic travel is commonplace, and the series features a wide variety of inhabited worlds. Some planets appear directly, while others are only referenced in dialogue.

Contents

[edit] Earth

Earth is the main planet in Futurama; Planet Express's home planet.

[edit] Amphibios 9

Amphibios 9 is a swampy planet with at least one moon. It is the homeworld of Kif Kroker and his race, a green-skinned, amphibian-like extraterrestrial race. Other lifeforms include a variety of snake-like creatures; a flying arthropod resembling a giant dragonfly from Earth's Carboniferous period but with a beak like that of a bird of prey; and an elephant-sized creature called a "poisonous froad" that resembles a blue poison arrow frog. The planet is seen in the first episode of season four, "Kif Gets Knocked Up a Notch", where Kif Kroker visits the planet to give birth to his tadpole-like young.

[edit] Eternium

[[Image:Hall of Eternium.png|right|thumb|200px|The Hall of Forever, the monoliths (when translated) say "Yummy Tummy" in the two Alien Alphabets used in the show]] Eternium is the home planet of the Nibblonians, long-lived three-eyed aliens, in the TV series Futurama.

Eternium appears in two episodes: "The Day the Earth Stood Stupid" and "The Why of Fry". It is described as being at the "Exact Center of the Universe", and having "inconceivable dimensions".

A notable feature on Eternium is the Hall of Forever, which is located "Ten Miles West of the Exact Center of the Universe". Since the Hall appears to be on the surface, this would imply the planet as being only ten miles in radius, assuming the center of the planet corresponds exactly to the center of the universe. The gravitional attraction of the planet does not seem to reflect this, however, so it is possible that the planet is not exactly centered on the center of the universe. Another possibility is that the planet is extremely dense (highly likely, due to their waste being dark matter) or is not spherical.

In the episode "The Day the Earth Stood Stupid", Nibbler states the Nibblonian race was already seventeen years old at the time of the Big Bang. No explanation has yet been given to whether or not this is somehow related to Eternium's location.

[edit] Omicron Persei 8

thumb|150px|Omicron Persei 8

Omicron Persei 8 is the fictional home world of a race of aliens, known as the Omicronians, ruled by emperor Lrrr and his wife Ndnd, on the animated television series Futurama. In the Futurama universe, it is a habitable planet orbiting the star Omicron Persei, which is about 1000 light years from Earth; this convenient coincidence allows the Omicronians in the 31st century to view 21st century television broadcasts. As seen in "Spanish Fry", the planet's design appears to be influenced heavily by Qo'noS, home planet of the Klingons on Star Trek.

[edit] Omicronians

The Omicronians are a large, fearsome, and extremely temperamental race. Their shape is vaguely humanoid, but they have rough, brownish skin, three short horns, webbed fingers, and are large enough to swallow an adult human whole. They are frequently seen wearing capes. In their first appearance ("When Aliens Attack"), the Omicronians are angrily attacking Earth, demanding a satisfactory resolution to a broadcast of Single Female Lawyer (a parody of the then-popular TV series Ally McBeal), which had been interrupted in 1999 by Fry clumsily spilling beer on a control panel in the New York studios of 20th Century Fox Television (home of both Ally McBeal and Futurama). Lrrr and Ndnd are also shown to be fans of Jay Leno and the series Friends, though Lrrr finds it "foolish" and is not very fond of the character Joey. He also wonders why Ross Geller, the largest of the friends, simply does not eat the other five.

Lrrr, the emperor of the Omicronians, implies in "When Aliens Attack" that they possess the ability to heat the Earth by a million degrees a day (for five days), and that they possess "a recipe for immortality", which they refuse to give to Earth (though Lrrr does imply that he would have given it to them if the finale of "Single Female Lawyer" had been good enough). This is backed up by the enormous power they wield against Earth (in the form of directed-energy weapons referred to as "anti-monument lasers"). In "The Problem with Popplers", he suggests that he believes it to be possible to produce billions of children in a few weeks, suggesting that they have a prodigious reproduction rate—further suggested by the fact that humans had managed to eat 198,000,000,000 Popplers. Earth is clearly afraid of the Omicronians, since 247 days after the brief war against Earth, the Earth government, through Romanticorp, hires Planet Express to deliver 20 billion conversation hearts as a diplomatic gesture that "Earth loves you *this* much" (Leela in "Love and Rocket"). The effort backfires when Lrrr finds the hearts "chalky and unpleasant" and he and Ndnd discover one heart that says "I WUV U". Though they are familiar with "love", "the concept of 'wuv' confuses and infuriates them, prompting them to attack the Planet Express crew, who barely escape.

[edit] Neighboring planets

Omicron Persei 8 has two neighboring planets, aptly named Omicron Persei VII and Omicron Persei IX, as revealed by the popular saying "Women are from Omicron Persei VII, men are from Omicron Persei IX" (an obvious parody of Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus). It is also revealed that Omicron Persei 8 has at least three moons in a reference to the classic catchphrase from The Honeymooners. In the episode "Spanish Fry" Lrrr says "One of these days... Bang, zoom, straight to the third moon of Omicron Persei 8!"

[edit] "Popplers"

Image:Young omicronian.jpg
Jrrr, an infant Omicronian.

The early developmental stage of an Omicronian is known as a "Poppler" ("The Problem with Popplers"). The name was chosen by Fry from a list of the two brand names on Earth that were not already trademarked, and after the rejection of the suggestion "Taste-icles."

Huge numbers of Popplers were discovered on an alien planet by the Planet Express crew. In their earliest stage, Popplers resemble fried shrimp and are extremely delicious. The Planet Express crew began harvesting them in large numbers, eventually selling them through the Fishy Joe's chain of seafood restaurants, where they proved extremely popular.

Popplers were only discovered to be sentient when Leela examined one that had been left uneaten for several days (through the slovenly habits of Fry) and it began talking to her. It was soon revealed that popplers were the infant stage of the Omicronian race, who deposit their young on "nursery planets". The elders demanded retribution for their 198 billion eaten infants, but were eventually satisfied when Lrrr ate one human, Free Waterfall Jr.

Upon reaching maturity, it is normal for Omicronian young to eat their mothers.

[edit] Minor planets

[edit] Seen or visited

These planets are actually visited or seen close-up during the course of an episode.

Amazonia A planet inhabited by giant female warriors, ruled by a giant "Femputer". The surface is covered in tropical rainforests, as well as many lakes and some visible meteor craters. The Amazonians are fond of basketball, and make up for their inability to dunk with their good fundamentals. Most men who land on Amazonia are almost immediately condemned to death by snu-snu, where they are subject to repeated bouts of sex with the Amazonians until their pelvises are crushed. Unbeknownst to the Amazonians, this is the way in which most men would prefer to die.
Chapek IX A world of "radical robot separatists" where "humans are killed on sight". Bender, Fry, and Leela go there to make a delivery. It is named after Karel Čapek, a Czech writer who coined the term "robot". The planet was colonized centuries ago by a group of radical robot separatists who despised working for humans and wanted to kill them all. These radical robots eventually created the five Robot Elders. The Robot Elders run the planet, though only from underground where they can not be seen. It is the Robot Elders who continue to feed the robots living on the planet lies about super-powers humans possess in order to maintain a certain level of fear and animosity. Above ground, the robot colony is run by a robot mayor. Every day a human hunt takes place at 5PM, yet for 146,000 days in a row no humans have ever been caught. After Fry, Leela, and Bender deliver the package to the robots whilst escaping from the planet, the robots praise humans for providing them with much needed lugnuts. Although it is not clearly stated, it could be assumed that after that delivery, the robots no longer hated humans.
First (and only) appearance - "Fear of a Bot Planet"
Planet - On first sight; the planet is blue-gray with an almost equal mix of land and water. Closer inspection reveals that it has an atmosphere breathable by humans and a very eroded surface. Many features show large-scale erosion of sedimentary rock by wind and water.
Fauna - The planet is devoid of animal life (at least near the robot city) and may be a by-product of the robots daily human hunts.
Flora - The plant life is itself very sparse with only a couple of varieties known. The most visible are several varieties of Bamboo-like plants. Three varieties of a Bamboo-like plant are known. All are composed of 1 to 4 segments with 1 to 4 orange leaves or petals extruding from the top. They all can reach a height of about 10 ft.
1a) Purple exterior composed of 1 to 4 segments with a gray ring between each segment.
1b) Purple exterior with no rings between segments.
1c) Light brown exterior that changes to red-brown on the uppermost segment with no rings between segments.
2) Large Mushroomlike form composed of yellowish disks separated by thin collars stacked on top of each other. Reaches a height of about 3 ft. note - this may actually be some type of fungi.
3) Large green bushes that grow in a slightly triangular pattern. They grow alone and in clumps and grow to about 6 ft.
4) a dark green grass-like plant that can grow in clumps and in large lawns. The clumps can grow to about 2-3 in.
Cyclopia Home of Alkazar, a shapeshifter with whom Leela has a brief relationship (in the episode "A Bicyclops Built For Two"). The surface area appears to be in ruins. There is some doubt whether this is the actual name of the planet, or if the name was changed to accommodate Alkazar's ruse.
Decapod X Dr. Zoidberg's (and the Decapodian) home planet, mostly a giant beach. Decapod X appears to be in orbit around a gas giant planet.
Mars The Red Planet, terraformed, home to Mars University. The planet's Western Hemisphere is owned by Amy Wong's parents, an ancestor of whom acquired it by 'duping' the native Martians. Buggalo (cow-ladybug like insects) live on it as well.

In the Futurama universe, Mars is, unlike Utah, habitable, with an atmosphere that has sufficient oxygen for life to exist. The Wong Family reside in a ranch house there and own at least half of the entire planet. The Wongs also donate much of their fortune to Mars University, one of the best colleges in all the galaxy. Mars University was also the university of choice for Amy, whose sorority was Kappa Kappa Wong. Mars mirrors the American West in the days of cowboys and Native Americans in that the college students and the Wongs encroach on the land of the native Martians.

McPluto Formerly Pluto, a dwarf planet, this icy world is now a large wildlife preserve populated with penguins and other polar creatures. Reference to McDonald's buying the planet in "The Problem with Popplers".[citation needed]
Mercury Fry and Amy visit Mercury under a blazingly close sun, to test out Amy's new car. There appears to be little human habitation on the planet, with the notable exception of one symbolically-named gas station (Hg's Gas), whose sign reads: "The only gas station 'til you circle the planet and get back here!" Amy and Fry ignore it. Despite the lack of life Mercury has a breathable atmosphere.
Near-Death Star An artificial planet where 160 year old humans are taken so they are out of the way on Earth. A reference to the Death Star from Star Wars.
Neptune Home of the Neptunians, a race of four-armed, purple humanoids to which Elzar the chef belongs. Robot Santa's fortress is located at the north pole of Neptune.
Neutral Planet Where everything is grey, the official motto is "Live free or don't", and the ruler of the planet has "no strong feelings one way or the other". When Zapp Brannigan attempted to attack the planet in "Brannigan Begin Again", a "beige alert" was issued, and the leader of the neutral planet said "If I don't survive, tell my wife 'Hello'".
Omega III A 'forbidden planet', featured in "Where No Fan Has Gone Before", where the original 79 episodes of the banned Star Trek was first jettisoned to, subsequently retrieved by the Planet Express crew. Home to Melllvar, a member of an unnamed energy/gas cloud-like species.
Osiris IV A planet similar to ancient Egypt, as the two cultures apparently were in contact; for a short period ruled by Bender in the position of Pharaoh.
Pova IX A planet featured in "The Lesser of Two Evils" that hosted the Miss Universe pageant. Appears to have been colonized by humans in the past.
Spa V The sauna planet. Previously home to a forced labour camp, but now all the work is done by a single Australian.
Spheron I An insignificant planet formerly inhabited by a race of creatures who resemble spheroids or balls. In the episode "War Is the H-Word", President Nixon's head commands Earth's forces, lead by Zapp Brannigan, to invade. Bender was able to "convince" the Spherons to leave their home planet forever.
Stumbos IV A high-gravity planet featured in "Brannigan Begin Again", where the crew are ordered to deliver pillows to a hotel situated there.
Tarantulon VI A planet inhabited by the Spiderians. The D.O.O.P. raged a war there and brought back $1 trillion worth of silk and treasure back to Earth, resulting in the $300 tax refund. It is mainly featureless. Interestingly, the Spiderians are more closely related to elephants than spiders.
Trisol A desert planet with three suns and apparently water-based inhabitants. It is located in the darkest depths of the Forbidden Zone in the Galaxy of Terror ("It's only a name!"). Fry accidentally drinks the Emperor and Leela discovers a that that's how every Emperor succeeded the former.
FIRST AND LAST APPEARANCE - "My Three Suns"
PLANET - Even from space it looks like a big desert with no visible surface water. On the ground it looks like an even bigger desert with almost every square inch of land covered by sand. Strangely, it does have a breathable atmosphere. This planet's orbit apparently causes it to, at least occasionally, move between two of it's suns. This was seen when Fry watched one sun set, and then turned around to see another rise.
ANIMAL LIFE - The only apparent animal life are the Trisolians themselves. No other animals are to be seen.
PLANT LIFE - There is no apparent plant life either. This suggests that a non-life generated oxygen cycle is taking place on this planet.
Tweenis XII The third known world that the Brainspawn destroyed.
Venus Not much is revealed about Venus on the show except that much of it has been terraformed into a bright pink jungle with significant volcanic activity.
Vergon VI A planet that no longer exists. The planet was once full of dark matter deep under its crust. After all the dark matter was mined out, the planet was left hollow and in danger of implosion. The planet's atmosphere contains oxygen and was also capable of supporting life. Nibbler was stationed on this planet for about 1,000 years before being found by Leela. In addition, an entire collection of animals found nowhere else in the universe thrived there. The Planet Express crew traveled to the planet in order to save the animal population, yet through a series of uncontrollable events failed to do so. In the end, the planet became so unstable that it finally imploded (on April 13, 3000) and was reduced to nothing but crust fragments. This was not a total disaster because, as Leela pointed out, some animals survived on the remaining asteroids. Apparently, there is no atmosphere or gravity on these asteroids. It is unclear whether Nibbler alone, or other Nibblonians were responsible for the huge amount of dark matter inside of the planet.
FIRST AND LAST APPEARANCE - "Love's Labours Lost in Space"
REFERENCE - "The Why of Fry"
PLANET - Once, a lush yellow-green planet with large areas of water. The surface was covered with life, both plant and animal and had a breathable atmosphere. Later, a loose conglomeration of chunks that will eventually make a pretty decent asteroid belt.
ANIMAL LIFE - Here is a list of the known animals that once inhabited the planet :
1) Purple Fruit Snake
2) Sharktopus
3) Chilean Space Bass
4) Parasitic Puppy
5) Gretchen Mole
6) Windy Shrimp
7) Vampire Slug
8) Excommunicated Cardinal
9) Four-Legged Mimic
10) Molotov Cockatoo
11) Hermaphlamingo.
PLANT LIFE - The plant life was at least a varied as the animal life with many forms similar to earth plants visible.
Wormulon A planet famous for the production of a soft drink called Slurm. Slurm's advertising catchphrase is "It's highly addictive". Wormulon has a ring system similar to Saturn's, but has been manipulated to display the Slurm logo.

[edit] Referenced in dialogue or on-screen

These planets are known to exist in the Futurama universe due to the dialogue or scenes of an episode, but are never actually seen in any detail.

Africon IX Referenced in "Raging Bender" on a poster in the movie theatre showing the movie 'Shaft on Africon IX', a reference to the movie Shaft in Africa.
Altair In "The Cyber House Rules", Adlai and Leela walk past an Altairean Bouquet Tree. Altair may simply be the name of the planetary system, and not the planet.
Arrakis The Miss Universe Pageant featured a contestant from Arrakis. A reference to Frank Herbert's Dune novels.
The Brain Slug Planet Home of the brain slugs, a race that controls other intelligent beings by attaching to their heads (they also seem to devour their hosts' brain matter). An Earth-based political party affiliated with the brain slugs advocates massive subsidies for this planet.
Cannibalon The cannibal planet.
Cineplex XIV The movie theater planet, requiring constant shipments of movie-grade popcorn.
Cowboy Planet Destroyed in "Love and Rocket" by the vaporization of the candy hearts
Cygnus V Home planet of the Cygnoids that work across the street from Planet Express in the pizzeria.
Deamenor The Miss Universe Pageant featured a contestant from Deamenor.
DogDoo VII Located at the edge of the universe (a joke involves the crew being tricked by two boys into going to the made-up planet of DogDoo VIII, only to return a week later to report that "the universe ends after DogDoo VII!").
Don Martin III The second known world which the Brainspawn destroyed.
Ebola IX The virus planet.
Eden VII A planet which was successfully carpet bombed by Zapp Brannigan.
Fantasy Planet Where everyone's fantasies come true. A take on Fantasy Island.
Gangster Planet I Destroyed in "Love and Rocket" by the vaporization of the candy hearts
Gangster Planet II Destroyed in "Love and Rocket" by the vaporization of the candy hearts
The Globetrotter Homeworld Home of Ethan "Bubblegum" Tate, the Harlem Globetrotters, and Globetrotter University.
Heaven The Miss Universe Pageant featured a contestant from Heaven, who was a being of pure energy with no corporeal form.
Hoth In "The Sting", Hermes exclaims "Sweet three toed sloth from ice planet Hoth!" A reference to Star Wars.
Hovering Squid World 97A Home to another Philip J. Fry in existence at the turn of the 20th century. Possibly a reference to the Blooper, a Squid enemy from the Mario series that sometimes hovers through the air.
Jupiter Home to a university, Jupiter State. The monolith from 2001: A Space Odyssey orbits the planet, although it is out of order. It smells like strawberries.
Klingon Has an embassy on the same street as many other planets on Earth.
M-14 A planet whose inhabitants are not allowed to view certain movies.
Methane Planet The Miss Universe Pageant featured a contestant from the Methane Planet who resembled a floating human female composed of methane gas.
Nigel VII Referenced in "Kif Gets Knocked Up A Notch". The Planet Express crew are ordered to deliver an extremely large pill there. A reference to the fictional planet of Rigel VII.
Nintenduu 64 During the second use of the "What If?" machine, Fry decides to see what life would be like if all of the universe was a video game. The planet Nintenduu 64 then attacks Earth à la Space Invaders. The name is an obvious parody of the Nintendo 64.
Nylar IV Inhabited by "Yarn People".
The Octillion System This galactic system of planets is mentioned in "Love's Labours Lost in Space" when Leela tells Fry and Bender that Zapp Brannigan single-handedly defeated a rampaging horde of killbots there. In actuality, Zapp sacrificed his own men by sending wave after wave of them at the killbots until their 'preset kill limit' was reached and they shut down.
The Planet of the Moochers Where the inhabitants constantly leech off of others.
Saturn This planet smells like pine needles.
Shrimpkin Planet Most likely destroyed prior the events of "Godfellas". Part of the Shrimpkin race was found on an asteroid which may have been part of the Shrimpkin homeworld.
Sicily VIII The mob planet. (Possibly one of many)
Space Earth Leela makes an off-camera delivery there in the final episode.
Space Rome The first known world the Brainspawn destroyed.
Unnamed Planet #2856-B The Miss Universe Pageant featured a contestant from Unnamed Planet #2856-B
Urectum Formerly Uranus, astronomers renamed this planet in 2620 "to end that stupid joke once and for all" according to Professor Hubert Farnsworth. See Uranus in fiction.
Vega IV Also known as Paramecium Homeworld. Despite being apparently single-celled creatures, its inhabitants reproduce sexually (or at least have "womanoid" forms). A news report mentions that this planet is attempting to wipe out the human race.
Zuban V Zuban V seems to be inhabited by a race that is very small and mummifies its leaders like Ancient Egypt (cf. Osiris IV above). In "I, Roommate", Professor Farnsworth owns the sarcophagus of Emperor Nimbala, who ruled the planet over 29 million years before the year 3000. Incidentally, Fry eats Nimbala's mummified remains, thinking that they are beef jerky ("I wanted to eat that mummy!"). In the same episode, the Professor gives Fry the mummified Zephulon the Great, who apparently is "teriyaki-style". There is also a race known as the Zubans that are also known for their cigars, similar to the Cubans of today. It is unknown if these Zubans are the same as those of the jerky-like mummies.
