Tjeldsundet is the sound (strait) between Hinnøya and mainland Norway, and in the southern part between Hinnøya and Tjeldøya island. The southern part is located in Nordland, while the northern part is in Troms. At the southern entrance is Lødingen, while Harstad is located at the northern entrance of the strait.
Tjeldsundet has been an important waterway for more than 1000 years and was well known and used in the Viking age.
The Tjeldsund Bridge connects Hinnøya to the mainland by the E10 road, also known as Kong Olavs vei (eng: King Olavs Road). The road from Harstad to Harstad/Narvik Airport, Evenes crosses this sound.
