Tizi Ouzou
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tizi Ouzou (in Kabyle: Tizi Uzzu in Latin script, in Tifinagh) is a city in Kabylia, Algeria, where it ranks second it population after Béjaïa. It is the capital and largest city of Tizi Ouzou Province and of the so-called Great Kabylia (Grande Kabylie, which is the western part of Kabylia).
[edit] Etymology
The name comes from the Kabyle Tizi (n) Uzezzu, which was contracted into Tizi Uzzu .
Tizi means mountain pass and azezzu (annexed state uzezzu) means broom (the preposition n "of" is not pronounced before u-). That is why the city is often referred to as "the city of broom" (French La ville des genêts).
