Tivoli, Aachen

The Tivoli in Aachen, Germany, is the stadium of Aachen's best known Football (soccer) team Alemannia Aachen.

In 1908, the city of Aachen leased the area of the old manor Tivoli to the club, named after the inn Gut Tivoli which was located there since the 19th century. The club later built a football field there. In 1925 more land was added to the lease, and the construction of the stadium was started. Inaugurated on June 3, 1928 it had a capacity of 11,000.

After World War II Alemannia Aachen played in the Oberliga West, and the stadium became too small. In September 1953 a standing tribune was built (the Würselener Wall.) It wasn't until 1957 that seats were added to the tribune and lighting for nighttime events. The new stadium was inaugurated on August 28, 1957 with a game against Español Barcelona. Additional seating areas have been constructed, and have sponsorships adorning them.

[edit] The New Tivoli

On may 17 in 2008 the Alemannia Aachen Football Club started buliding a new stadium wich will keep the name of the old stadium, Tivoli. The city first suggested the new stadium should be built outside the city, near the local airport however the fans wanted the stadium built within the city. After much debate, in February 2007 plans were released showing the new stadium will be built in Sportpark Soers, the sporting area the current stadium is in.

For club games the new stadium will have a capacity of 32,900, being 19,655 (seats) 11,496 (terracing), 1274 cooperate seats, 22 VIP lounges with 10 seats each, 95 places for Wheelchairs, 110 seats for the press and 2 event lounges with 40 seats. For games where terracing is not allowed the capacity will be 25,587.
