Tiverton High School is a secondary school located in the town of Tiverton, Devon, England that is a specialist visual arts college.[1]

The school is situated on the outskirts of the town, surrounded by countryside, and there is a close working relationship with the nearby East Devon College.

Andrew Lovett has been the headmaster of the school, since 2004, that has around 1,200 pupils aged 11-16.[2]

In 2001 the School won the 'Investors in Education Business Partnership' award.[3]

[edit] Meningitis

In 2004 a girl in year ten died due to meningitis. The presence of the disease had already been known due to a boy in the same year group catching the virus, who recovered.[4]

[edit] Computing

The School is notable for being one of the very last bastions of RISC OS computing in education. They used thin client technology to deliver Windows if needed.[5] However in 2007 the school closed the last of the RISC OS rooms whiched was replaced with brand new Apple Macs which are quickly popping up elsewhere in the Art and Design and Technology Department. Windows XP is used throughout the rest of the school. They now have a total of four IT rooms as well as a library kitted out with Apple Macs.

[edit] Energy conservation

In February 2005 in a case study sponsored by the Energy Saving Trust the School, in conjunction with Devon County Council, installed Building Energy Management Systems at the School that not only brought energy savings but provided a hook on which to introduce energy conservation into the curriculum.[6]

[edit] Visual archive on Tiverton floods

In a unique initiative, the government Environment Agency formed a partnership with local people and the School who made a video, launched in December 2006, that will serve as a visual archive of photographs and recollections of the historic flooding in Tiverton in the 1960s.[7] [8]

[edit] 'Caravan of the Future'

in 2005 the Caravan Club invited designers, engineers, and others to design the 'Caravan of the Future’. Tiverton High was awarded a special merit prize in February 2007.[9]

[edit] Theatre and Art

The school is well known in the area for its art and theatrical productions. Musicals take place every two years, while other plays take place every year alongside the school's Art Presentations. Since 2003, the musicals have been, Return to the Forbidden Planet and Big Al. The plays since 2003 have been The Yarn, Strangers and this year's production of The Children's Crusade from the National Youth Theatre.
