Instead of counting your edits 500-at-a-time in your contributions list, you could use Interiot's tool, which provides an edit counter and graphs of your Wikipedia participation. Another tool is the contribution tree, which lists the number of edits by namespace and by article - on its opening screen, click on a namespace to see the number of edits to specific articles.
