Tipacoque is a municipality and town in Boyacá Department, Colombia, located on the Eastern mountain range, in the western flank of the Chicamocha river canyon and part of the subregion of the Northern Boyacá Province.

The municipality is located at an altitude of 2405 meters (7890 feet) over sea level, and its average temperature is 18 °C (64.4 °F). The warmest months in Tipacoque are December and January, when the temperature exceeds 25 °C. The municipality is located 174 km away from Tunja, the capital of Boyacá. The main highway that communicates Tipacoque with Bogotá and the East of Colombia is 174 km long, of which 150 km are paved (87%).

The total area of the Municipality is of 72 km² and is limited by:

  • To the North: Covarachía and Capitanejo.
  • To the South: Soatá.
  • To the East: The Chicamocha river separates it from Capitanejo and Boavita.
  • To the West: A branch of the Eastern mountain range separates it from Onzaga (in Santander). The branch displays a mountainous relief with heights that oscillate from 1200 mts at the base of the Chicamocha Canyon and over 3,000 mts in the site denominated "Cruz de Roble".

The climate in Tipacoque is predominantly dry. The vegetation is varied. The fauna is composed mainly by mammal species like rabbits, armadillos, and tinajos, which live in the higher altitudes. In the low lands the reptiles like lizards, iguanas, and serpents predominate as well as cucuruchos, a very particular species that moves with ease over the waters of the Chicamocha river. There's a wide variety of birds but the most common are garrrapateros, hummingbirds, toches, turpiales, gurrias, doves, perdices, pregoneros and cuchicas, endemic species that can be found in the creeks that flow to the chicamocha river.

Additionally, the novel by Eduardo Caballero Calderón 'Tipacoque: Estampas de provincia' [1971] describes the Colombian society in this region of Boyacá.
