Tioga Downs

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Tioga Downs is a standardbred racetrack opened in 2006 in Nichols, New York. It originally opened as a quarterhorse track known as Tioga Park in 1976, closing down a few years later, due to decreased popularity.

[edit] Revival

The racetrack has now been revived and completely refinished. It is now a harness racing track. It reopened June 9, 2006 with its first race starting at 6:50p.m. The racetrack boasted over 15,000 visitors the first weekend. It is now offering, in addition to harness racing, simulcast betting from other tracks, and Video Lottery Terminals (also known as VLTs), which are commissioned by the state. It is co-owned by Southern Tier Acquisitions LLC, and Tioga Downs LLC.

[edit] Economic Impact

Property taxes have now increased due to this new business in Tioga County. Over 400 jobs have been created by the racetrack. The track is estimated to pump $4.2 million yearly into Tioga County's economy.
