[edit] Image uploading

hi Tintin. I want to upload some images from this website http://palakkad.nic.in/. It is a government website, so it is in the public domain right. There are no copyright notes and i have seen these images in many other websites also. Tell me whether it is ok...--Raghu 11:45, 15 December 2005 (UTC)

Then it is fine. btw you put my talk page in the "PD Indian Government" category for some time! Raghu 14:05, 15 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] PD-In

No, India govt images are not in PD. Pamri has confirmed it from his lawyer friends. Regards, =Nichalp «Talk»= 12:44, 15 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] S*jeewa de Silva

Hello Tintin,

You moved Sujeewa de Silva to Sajeewa de Silva a couple of days ago, but I think they're different people! (I haven't checked to see which one the article is about).

Stephen Turner (Talk) 13:58, 15 December 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for fixing it. I put in links from one to the other too. Stephen Turner (Talk) 15:07, 15 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Re: Statistics

Will it be possible to generate any statistics about the number of edits per day in the topics under WP:Cricket ? Tintin 14:15, 16 December 2005 (UTC)

Hello Tintin. That's an interesting idea, and one I hadn't thought of. Are you looking for the number of edits per day since the article was created, or the number in the last month, or what? Is it useful for anything particular, or just for curiosity? Stephen Turner (Talk) 14:24, 16 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] My RFA

Thank you for voting for me at my RFA, which closed with a 24/1/1 outcome. I will do my best in the position I now am in. Thanks again, and see you around Wikipedia!

[edit] Hello Again

Regarding Pulikkanny deletion, Somebody had added wrong information about the village, If you read the history page you can see that, but you send me a message (in my talk page) as if it was done by me. If you go through the history you can see that I have cleaned the unwanted matters and added genuine details.

[edit] DYK

Updated DYK query Did you know? has been updated. A fact from the article Bapu Nadkarni, which you recently created, has been featured in that section on the Main Page. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the "Did you know?" talk page.

Pls. mention your own suggestions as self-nom so that our work is reduced ;) --Gurubrahma 18:04, 20 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Vizzy

I doubt if it would be available and worth the effort. Looks like it's a thesis from Andhra University, Vizag - ask User:Vyzasatya if he knows abt this. How abt a note on WP:INWNB? --Gurubrahma 18:04, 20 December 2005 (UTC)

I'm at work now, and I'll have a look at Wisden 1966 when I get home tonight. Seem to remember it's dominated by Hammond obits, including some extremely strange prose from Cardus. Johnlp 09:52, 22 December 2005 (UTC)
Right, it's not very long, 11 lines in all. It reads:

"Vizianagram, The Rajkumar of, Sir Gajapatairaj Vijaya Ananda, who died in Benares, Northern India, on December 2, aged 59, captained the Indian team in England in 1936. He showed his strength of character before the first Test match by sending home as a disciplinary measure India's most successful all-rounder, L. Amarnath, who had scored more runs than anyone and hit two centuries in the game against Essex at Brentwood. In three matches against England, "Vizzy", as he was known in the cricket world, scored only 33 runs, his highest innings being 19 not out at Lord's. On the whole tour, however, his aggregate reached 600, including 60 from the University bowling at Oxford, average 16.21. Three times he was elected President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India. He was a member of the Indian Legislative Assembly."

And that's it. Wisden in 1966 was pretty much an English publication, with very limited coverage of cricket elsewhere. Cricket in India gets seven pages, whereas cricket at the English public schools gets 59. I've got Wisden 1937 somewhere if you want me to look up more about the 1936 tour. Johnlp 20:30, 22 December 2005 (UTC)

Wisden 1937 is a degree more intriguing. Do you have a copy of the tour report from it? If not, there's a couple of paragraphs that I'd happily transcribe for you. Johnlp 21:01, 22 December 2005 (UTC)
Wisden has him born on 28 December 1905. Bailey, Thorn and Wynne-Thomas's original Who's Who of Cricketers (1984 edition) has the same date and says "Benares, India" for place of birth, as well as place of death. Johnlp 16:42, 26 December 2005 (UTC)
If one of the aims of your research (as well as historical certainty) is to know exactly when to celebrate Vizzy's centenary, then I suggest you do it yesterday, today, tomorrow and the day after tomorrow, just to be sure to be correct! Good excuse for a very long party! ;-) Johnlp 18:20, 26 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Template:Indiafreedom

Hey Tintin - I don't know what you mean, coz if you click on his name, you get his bio. If there is a particular problem, feel free to fix it. I'm not gonna be available for some time.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you.

Jai Sri Rama!

Rama's Arrow 16:35, 21 December 2005 (UTC)

Hi again - nono that's a separate thing. Somebody added the Category:Indian freedom fighters to the article. It's not connected with the template.

I'll rmv that cat from the Mountbatten article.

Jai Sri Rama!

Rama's Arrow 17:18, 21 December 2005 (UTC)

Hi - turns out its not a separate thing....I've rmv the template from the article.

I wish we could rename the entire Category:Indian freedom fighters to Category:Indian Independence Movement. Then we could put this in.

Jai Sri Rama!

[edit] WP:DSI and Chetan Sharma

Hi, deletion sorting is causing some problems. e.g. Gems from Vedas - this and someother articles have been relisted within a space of 3 days --> Shd. we again be adding it to the WP:DSI page? If we do, do we delete it from the previous date? The instructions need updation. btw, Chetan Sharma needs your deft touches for expansion (+ adding infobox etc.) - on lines of what you've done for Bapu Nadkarni, something simply brilliant. --Gurubrahma 07:03, 22 December 2005 (UTC)

--Aravind Parvatikar 15:44, 26 December 2005 (UTC) Thank you for the clarification. All the while I was reading about copyrights. I think I am on a learning curve.

[edit] Images

Hey Tintin... I apologize, but I have another question, hope you are not annoyed For example the image of Adi Sankaracharya is commonly available in every household. It is generic and no one knows the artist who owns the copyright. Image Search on Google

  • so does some on have copyright on the image?
  • Can these kind of genric images be used on Wikipedia?
  • Can I upload scanned copies of calendars or genric art material?
  • Where I can find out that the creator / owner of the image has given up the copyright or released it in public domain?

It would be great if you could help in understanding this a bit. --Aravind Parvatikar 16:04, 26 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Re: Reverse (cricket)

Hi, I am trying to confirm it again. What you said in WP:Cricket is that the picture and writeup describes correctly the way Waugh and Harvey bowled the slower ball, right ? It is only the name that doesn't look familiar. Tintin 01:27, 27 December 2005 (UTC)

Yep, while I've never looked at the "technical" side of bowling it (eg where the back of the hand points), the pictures accurately show what I've seen of it. Harvey is mentioned bowling it here, here and even in ball-by-ball commentary, here (over 41.1). And yeh, I haven't heard it called the "reverse" ("back of the hand slower ball" is the only 'name' i can recall) - but as someone mentioned, it may be a regional thing. AlbinoMonkey (Talk) 02:17, 27 December 2005 (UTC)

When taking an exam for my English Cricket Board Level 2 coaching badge there was a multi-choice question on slower balls. One of the slower balls it listed was the reverse. I discussed the delivery a bit with Essex coach Terry Charrington. I'd also come across fast bowling coach Ian Pont using this term when advertising his courses. I'm only an occasional bowler, but it's a nice variation even for my military medium. It's easier than most slower balls to spot, but the ball turns much more than a normal leg cutter as the seam hits the deck like a leg break. --David.castell 23:55, 28 December 2005 (UTC)

Ahh. That second link above - it talks about dipping the shoulder. I've not been taught how to bowl a reverse, I learnt it by experimenting. I found that I have to dip my left shoulder quite a bit at point of release in order to get the back of the hand in the right position. I feel that the dip makes the ball more obvious to the batsman. I'd thought that someone more supple than me could bowl it with less dip. Very interesting. If Alan Donald feels it is an inherent part of the delivery then I'll update the page. --David.castell 00:06, 29 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Chetan Sharma

Hi, great work. Now that I've got the hang of how to do it, I think I'll be able to create articles for Shivlal Yadav and Venkatapathy Raju, definitely the latter. --Gurubrahma 06:08, 27 December 2005 (UTC)

Hi Tintin, thanks for sorting India related AfD. I have two RfD (non-India relatred):
  • "Fielding Lucas Jr."
  • "David Rumsey"
Could you tell me how to tag them under the correct sorting? --rgds. Miljoshi | talk 08:57, 27 December 2005 (UTC)

This user supports the

... though I think you are Sherlock! I'd wondered why the career total of runs in my 2005 Wisden was one less than the career total in the 1972 Wisden, and this explains it. I've corrected the article now. Johnlp 23:49, 29 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Walter French, and other umpires

Thanks, Tintin, for picking up his year of death (I should have noted it myself, in Wisden Australia). I think our score is 2:1 with you in the lead! MulgaBill 03:07, 1 January 2006 (UTC)

G'day again, and thanks for all the corrections - I try to check links but sometimes stuff up (eg New Zealand Sutcliffe for the Pommy one!) Re Melbourne - I have noted locality/state for all entries (where known). Sometimes one can be precise, eg Toowong is a suburb of Brisbane, and should be named as the place. On other cases only the city is given so one has to be general. In most cases "Melbourne, Victoria" would mean "a suburb within the metropolitan area of Melbourne", Victoria. But there's no point linking to the state of Victoria, or NSW, or whatever. Does this make sense? MulgaBill 03:50, 1 January 2006 (UTC)

Now you're getting me confused! (Not difficult, I agree!) What I wanted to achieve was to link to the specific place, but to use the convention of place/state. Hence Melbourne, Victoria which prints as "Melbourne, Victoria" and links to the city, but not to the state (if anyone wants to know more about the state, they're welcome to follow links from the specific place). I just thought this would be the simplest. But if you prefer another convention, I don't mind, you're welcome to make whatever changes you think appropriate. Cheers.
