A few days after Yūtarō began training in the Kamiya Kasshin Ryū, the group is attacked by Raijūta who wants to defeat Kenshin since he rejected joining to his dojo. Although Kenshin defeats using only his left hand, Raijūta breaks the right arm of Yūtarō with one of his techniques leaving him unable to practice the swordmanship. In order to heal Yūtarō, his father decides to go with him to Germany, but before doing that Yahiko attacks Yūtarō reminding him to return. As the time goes Sanosuke finds an old friend from the Sekihotai who wants to attack the Meiji Government. Seeing that this would not be what their captain wanted, Sanosuke stops him. The volume ends with a one-shot of Nobuhiro Watsuki called Crescent Moon in the Warring States.

Saitō Hajime, a former Shinsengumi member, appears in the Kamiya Kasshin Ryū dojo looking for Kenshin and leaves Sanosuke injured, who realizes he wants to fight against him. After discovering this, Kenshin receives a challenging letter from Saitō, and ends up fighting one of his partners only to confirm how strong is he. Kenshin easily defeats him and when he returns to the dojo he meets Saitō Hajime and both start fighting. During the fight, Kenshin is overpowered many times forcing him to recover his hitokiri personality. Before the last attack, both are interrupted by the ex-Ishin Shishi Ōkubo Toshimichi who requests Kenshin to go to Kyoto to kill the hitokiri Shishio Makoto, who plans to destroy the Meiji Government. One week later, Ōkubo is killed by a soldier of Shishio, resulting in the decision of Kenshin to go to Kyoto.
