Another example. Quite educational, too, since it exhibits one problem with paradigmatic clarity.
Previous, incorrect version: (It's #217 in the bibliography.)
Here is the old text of formatted reference, from the edit window of edit page:
<ref name="Titan1">{{cite web|url=http://www.uksfbooknews.net/2007/03/28/new-manga-range-from-titan-books-launching-in-april/print/|title=New Manga range from Titan Books launching in April|work=Sandy Auden|date=2007-03-28|publisher=The UK SF Book News Network|accessdate= 2007-12-19}}</ref>
Here is what it produces when it comes out in the bibliography:
- ^ New Manga range from Titan Books launching in April. Sandy Auden. The UK SF Book News Network (2007-03-28). Retrieved on 2007-12-19.
Now, let's ask what "Sandy Auden" is. Going back into the format version, "Sandy Auden" appears in the "work" field of the citation template, meaning that "Sandy Auden," like Jennifer Fishbein, is also a "work," this time published on 3/28/2007.
Next, when we visit the website, we of course discover that Sandy Auden is the author. Whoever Sandy Auden is, the name does not refer to a "work."
Current, corrected version:
<ref>Auden, Sandy. 2007-03-28. "New Manga range from Titan Books launching in April." The UK SF Book News Network. http://www.uksfbooknews.net/2007/03/28/new-manga-range-from-titan-books-launching-in-april/print/ Accessed 2007-12-19.</ref> Which comes out, as reference #2, as
- ^ Auden, Sandy. 2007-03-28. "New Manga range from Titan Books launching in April." The UK SF Book News Network. http://www.uksfbooknews.net/2007/03/28/new-manga-range-from-titan-books-launching-in-april/print/ Accessed 2007-12-19.
And the #2 reference is correct. Longer, but everything is now accurate.
- Then Peregrine Fisher left me a note about the cite web template. He said:
-
- "... It has lots of fields, but only requires url and title. Here's all the fields.
-
- {{cite web |url= |title= |accessdate= |accessmonthday= |accessdaymonth= |accessyear= |author= |last= |first= |authorlink= |coauthors= |date= |year= |month= |format= |work= |publisher= |pages= |language= |doi= |archiveurl= |archivedate= |quote= }}"
- Thanks, Peregrine. So this person, well-intentioned without doubt, didn't really know how to use the template. And Sandy Auden became a "work" just like Jennifer Fishbein.
All told, I found three like this.

- I think they were just using cite web incorrectly. It has lots of fields, but only requires url and title. Here's all the fields.
- {{cite web |url= |title= |accessdate= |accessmonthday= |accessdaymonth= |accessyear= |author= |last= |first= |authorlink= |coauthors= |date= |year= |month= |format= |work= |publisher= |pages= |language= |doi= |archiveurl= |archivedate= |quote= }} - Peregrine Fisher (talk) 21:07, 4 January 2008 (UTC)
