Tim Cotterill (1950- ) known as ‘Frogman’, is an English-born artist who specializes in bronze sculpture. His work is influenced by the natural world, with his principal focus devoted to capturing the whimsical character of frogs. Bright, jewel-like patinas and stylized forms characterize his sculptures. Cotterill is a popular artist with a wide American and international collector base. His Frogman bronze sculptures range from miniature to monumental, and now form a significant portfolio of over a hundred pieces in limited editions of up to five thousand.

Tim Cotterill lives and works in Venice Beach, California where he devotes himself to the creation of Frogman bronze sculptures. He has dedicated many years to the design and construction of “Paradise,” his oasis of tropical gardens, home and studio.

Cotterill was born in Leicester, England, in 1950. His childhood experiences in the secluded woods of the English countryside were the beginning of his life-long fascination with nature. His youth was devoted to the natural world, spent footloose in the forest and as a backyard ornithologist. Cotterill left school at the age of fifteen to complete a six-year engineering apprenticeship.

As a young artist intrigued with metalworking and inspired by his love of nature, Cotterill created metal sculptures of animals and birds. His work as a sculptor evolved as he refined his technique and his personal artistic vision began to take shape. As he created sculptural forms from the natural world, he simultaneously pushed the latest trends in his other passion of motorbike design. He used many of the same materials to challenge himself in the development of new production techniques for both endeavors. The birds from his earliest childhood memories took form out of metal scraps from his latest motorbike metal modification. These early original steel, bronze and gold bird and animal sculptures are in art collections throughout the world.

Cotterill was increasingly drawn to California in the 1980’s, where he periodically sculpted and showed his work. As his art developed an American following, the momentum brought him to immigrate to California in 1990. Frogs became Cotterill’s focus, as new influences and personal growth brought an evolution in his subject matter and new introspection into his work. His intimate childhood experiences with frogs unfolded with his deeper interest in their symbolism for positive energy, luck, and magic. The unique style of Frogman sculptures is the result of Cotterill’s long devotion to the mastery of sculpting and the refinement of patina techniques. His sculptural work is dedicated to capturing his personal joyfulness and love of life in the essence of his frogs.
