Timothy Freke is a writer who has a degree in philosophy and has written several books on world mysticism. He has co-authored several books with Peter Gandy, including The Jesus Mysteries; a top 10 best-seller in the UK and USA, an Amazon.com 'surprise bestseller', and a 'Book of the Year' in The Daily Telegraph[citation needed],and Jesus and the Lost Goddess, an exegesis of Christian (especially Gnostic) mythology with regard to interpretation and philosophy. The latter was cited by Dan Brown as an inspiration for The Da Vinci Code.[citation needed] Recently he was interviewed for the History Channel documentary Beyond The Da Vinci Code and has been the focus of 'Modern Mystics' on the BBC World Service and 'Beyond Belief' on BBC Radio 4.[citation needed]
Freke's recent work, "The Laughing Jesus: Religious Lies and Gnostic Wisdom", again co-authored with Peter Gandy, is a critique of religious literalism and affirms mystical spirituality. This book follows on from "The Jesus Mysteries" which is an examination of the evidence for a historical Jesus and parallels Paganism with early Christianity. Although backed up by scholarly research, Freke and Gandy's works are written to be accessible for a popular audience.
Freke and Gandy's latest book The Gospel of the Second Coming is a departure from their usual academic style of writing, and is described as a post-modern Gnostic gospel for the 21st century in which Jesus as a fictional character "corrects" all the misunderstandings that have arisen since his first coming. The tagline for the book is "Jesus is back...and this time he's funny!" [1]
Freke has written on Gnosticism, the ancient religious movement. However, Freke also uses the term 'Gnosticism' to describe his mystical approach, contrasted with 'Literalism', which he defines as rigid dogmatic religious belief and criticises as a dangerous force in today's world.[citation needed]
Freke also lectures and runs experiential seminars in the UK, USA and Europe.
