Timothy F. Ritchey

Timothy F. "Tim" Ritchey (born May 21, 1951 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) is an American Thoroughbred racehorse trainer. He is best known as the trainer of Afleet Alex, a 2005 winner of two American Classic Races, the Preakness and Belmont Stakes.

Racing Background: -Ritchey has been riding horses since he was 2 1/2 years old, spending every weekend of his youth and his aunt and uncle's farm near Pittsburgh -At age 18, attended the Potamac Horse Center to further his riding education and eventually spent 11/2 years training with the United States Olympic Equestrian Team for the Munich games -Went on to ride steeplechase races before turning to training -Five-time leading trainer at Delaware Park in 1992, 1993, 1994, 1996 and 2001 -Established Delaware Park single-meet wins record in 2001 with 87 trips to the winner's circle -2004 marks the 13th consecutive year Ritchey has finished in the top four of the Delaware Park trainers' standings -Made his first Triple Crown appearance in the 2001 Preakness when his Federico Tesio Stakes winner Marciano finished seventh -Saddled Docent to back-to-back victories in the Maryland Million Classic in 2002 and 2003 -Saddled 1999 Pennsylvania Derby winner Smart Guy -Other top runners he's trained include multiple stakes winners Cat Be Nimble, Gimmeawink and Citiroyal -Ranked 49th nationally in 2002 with $2,621,473 earned and 56th nationally in 2003 with $2,388,246 T-hrough Oct. 3, he had saddled 69 winners and the earners of $2,044, 473 -Claimed Separato for $40,000 in June 2004 and four starts later won the $100,000 President's Cup at Philadelphia Park for the colt's third straight victory -Reached pinnacle of his training career by winning both Preakness and Belmont Races with Afleet Alex. -Current stable includes 45 horses at the track, where he races annually in Delaware, Arkansas, Maryland and Pennsylvania -He is married to Janet Ritchey formerly Wood of England. -His two sons are Christopher Ritchey [1] and Benjamin Ritchey both born in Lebanon Pennsylvania
