Islamic Jihad 28 March 2006, Islamic Jihad fired a 122mm Katyusha rocket from the Gaza Strip into Israel.^[1] Katyushas, frequently used by Hezbollah in Lebanon, had never before been fired from Gaza. Larger numbers of Qassam rockets began landing in the Western Negev in March of 2006: 49 in March, 64 in April, 46 in May, and over 83 by the end of June. Most of the rocket launches prior to 2006 were carried out by Islamic Jihad but following Hamas's election victory, other groups such as Palestinian Islamic Jihad Movement have been claimed to take over the firings. Hamas Following the Gaza beach blast in which seven members of one family and one other Palestinian were killed on a Gaza beach, the armed wing of Hamas calls off its 16-month-old truce. Israel claims it was shelling 250m away from the family's location; Palestinians claimed that the explosion was Israeli responsibility.^[2] ^[3] ^[4] ^[5] ^[6] ^[7] ^[8] ^[9]

IDF Israel kills 11 Palestinians in a missile strike on a van carrying Palestinian militants and rockets in Gaza. Among those killed are nine civilian bystanders. Reuters calls this "the deadliest such attack in four years".^[3]

IDF Israeli commandos entered the Gaza Strip and captured Osama and Mustafa Muamar, who Israel claims are Hamas militants, and Palestinians claims are the sons of a Hamas supporter but not Hamas members themselves. It was Israel's first raid into the Strip since the country pulled out of Gaza in September 2005.^[10]^[11]^[12]

Hamas Hamas soldiers launch a cross-border raid into Israel from the Gaza Strip, killing two Israeli soldiers and capturing Israeli Corporal Gilad Shalit.^[3]

Hamas Shalit's captors call for the release of all Palestinian women and children under the age of 18 held in Israeli prisons in return for information about Shalit.^{[citation needed]}
Israel Israel refuses to bargain with Hamas,^{[citation needed]} as they view them as a terrorist organization and their methods and policies to be acts of terror.

IDF Israel Defense Forces (IDF) troops move into southern Gaza, where Shalit is believed to be held. Israeli airplanes bomb bridges and Gaza's power station. The coastal area electricity supply is reduced by more than 40 per cent. (see: Operation Summer Rains)

IDF Israeli troops detain one third of the Palestinian cabinet and nearly two dozen members of the Palestinian Legislative Council who are Hamas members.^[3]

The group that captured Shalit request that Israel free 1000 "Palestinian, Arab and Muslim prisoners" and end the attack on Gaza in return for releasing Shalit. Israel rejects the proposal.^[3]
