Tim Cartmell is a martial artist, creator of the syncretic style Shen Wu, and author and translator of a number of texts on martial arts.
Tim started studying Kung Fu San Soo at the age of eleven and studied the art for twelve years. He started Kung-Fu San Soo with Frank Woolsey Kung-Fu Studios Inc. in Huntington Beach, CA. and later continued training with Ted Sias and Jimmy H. Woo. Tim then moved to Taiwan in 1984 to study internal martial arts, with a focus on real fighting application. He began visiting China in 1985, but didn't study with any significant figures until later. He traveled with Dan Miller as a translator to aid in the publication of the Pa Kua Chang Journal.
In Taiwan, he studied under several He Bei style Xing Yi Quan teachers, including with Xu Hong Ji and later with his son Xu Zhen Wang. He studied Old style Yang Tai Ji Quan and Xu Xi Dao (an esoteric Crane style) with Chen Zhuo Zhen. He continued Tai Ji study with Lin Ah Long, who taught the Yang and Chen Zhao Bao]styles. He studied Yi Quan and the Internal styles with Gao Liu De. He studied the Old Frame of the Chen style with Xu Fu Jin. He studied Gao style Ba Gua Zhang and Chen Pan Ling style Tai Ji Quan with Luo De Xiu. He also competed in and won several full contact competitions there, learning the value of being proficient in striking, wrestling, and grappling arts as well as sparring with skilled, non-cooperative opponents.
In Beijing, he studied Sun Style Tai Ji Quan and Ba Gua Zhang with the Sun family: Sun Jian Yun, Sun Bao An and Liu Yan Long. He studied He Bei style Xing Yi Quan with Liang Ke Quan. He also studied Shan Xi style Xing Yi Quan with Mao Ming Chun.
He returned to the states in 1994 and began practicing Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, earning his black belt from Cleber Luciano in 2003. Tim is a Silver medalist in the World Championships of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at black belt level, he has won the Pan-American Brazilian Jiu Jitsu tournament twice as well as winning the prestigious Copa Pacifica de Jiu Jitsu seven times. Tim is also a submissions grappling champion. He currently runs the Shen Wu Academy of Martial Arts in Garden Grove, California.
