Talk:Timothy Freke

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

So far just a stub. Can we do more? I never heard of the guy, but I suggest naming what University he received his PhD. from; what University he currently teaches at; a synopsis of his arguments about Jesus; an account of how they have been recieved by other scholars (e.g. a citation index; summary of reviews of books in academic journals) Slrubenstein

He is from the UK. CheeseDreams 00:44, 5 Nov 2004 (UTC)

P.s. I thought stubs were {{stub}} and you weren't supposed to sign articles.

[edit] Still Needs Work

I have added a booklist which I mostly got from Amazon.com. If anyone knows more please add them or correct the dates if there are earlier editions. I made some minor changes to the biography, which I think came from his official website. If anyone has more information on him like his education, please add it. I have not been able to find anything else. FWIW, Freke does not have a PhD, I am pretty sure his only degree is a BA. He does not teach at any university I can find, and he probably never has. Every book of his I have read is a popular work, which is not to say that they are necessarily all bad but they do not follow standards of academic research. I went through Jesus Mysteries pretty carefully, and it would not pass peer review. I do not know of any specialist in the subject areas of this book who uses it as the basis for research. I am not trying to comment on the arguments of the book in any way; I am just saying that it is not an academic book and a historian or classicist in academia would not rely on this book. Personally I do not think that Freke should be called a theologian, but I will leave that decision to someone else. Maestlin 19:49, 10 March 2006 (UTC)

I agree about the removal of the theologian tag. I removed it. ken 00:57, 13 June 2006 (UTC)kdbuffalo

[edit] No PhD, Not an academic, not an expert, just a populist

This man does not have a PhD, his 'degree' is in analytic philosophy which has NOTHING to do with religion or mysticism. This guy is such a bullshitter. I hope he dies and burns in hell. We have to obey wikipedia rules but also, we have to put the FACTS straight; namely, that this guy has not academic authority and is just a demagogue —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Kantian (talkcontribs) 17:53, 2 February 2007 (UTC).

  • I must point out to you that his co-author, Peter Gandy, "has an M.A. in classical civilization" and therefore provides the authority you are looking for (http://www.randomhouse.com/author/results.pperl?authorid=44250). Just because you don't like an academic's conclusions does not mean you can call them "such a bullshitter". Get your facts straight. -Yeshuahasochek (talk) 07:33, 16 March 2008 (UTC)
