Talk:Time Dilation Device (Stargate)

This aticle is wrong. The Asgard used an Ancient time dialation device. Tobyk777 21:24, 25 February 2006 (UTC)

At no point was that stated. Time Dialation devices were mentioned in Prometheus Unbound and Unnatural Selection (Where the technology was obviously of Asgard construction.), again in New Order (No mention of the Ancients being involved in their construction.) And again in Ripple Effect. The device in Ripple Effect did not conform to any previously encountered Ancient designs, like the Original device from Unnatural Selection. Also, no shown time device even remotely resembles and Ancient device, except for the ones shown to be Ancient. (Window of Oppurtunity, and It's good to be king/moebius) Kashami 00:30, 7 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Not completely wrong...

Whilst there was no mention of the Ancients coinciding with the time dialation device, it has been learned that the Ancients originally possessed such artificial time dialation technology, and seeing that they were at the head of the alliance of the four great races in ancient times, they most likely gave this ability to the Asgard. It would be a safe asumption to say this technology is of Ancient design.

How do you know the Ancients were the leaders. the Ancients in the alliance were most likely the ones who came back from Atlantis. The milky way ancients either died or ascended before then. The Atlantis Ancients came back 10,000 years ago. That was about the time the nox and asgard became advanced. (Also the Goa'uld) In one episode it was stated that the Asgard just got space ship technology 30,000 years ago. Since the Ancients have been around for 50,000,000 years it could be reasoned that they were the leaders. But the Atlantis Ancients just got there. So, it's hard to say who the leaders were. Also, when the device was shown in unatural selection, it appeared to be ancient design. Tobyk777 02:30, 22 March 2006 (UTC)

Thor didnt have a massive understanding of the time technolgy, so it could be that the asgard have only recently invited such devices?--Matthew Fenton 14:52, 27 March 2006 (UTC)

The ancients did experiment with time on Atlantis, but chose to abandon any related discoveries before they even left for the Milky Way (see Before I Sleep). I think it's unlikely that they would have told about these dangerous discoveries to an less advanced race. Especially because they had problems with rogue scientists playing with this subject.(Apparently Janus or someone else ultimately even succeeded as seen for example in Moebius). The Asgard may simply have discovered the time dilatation technology independantly and very recently, which would explain why they had not used it sooner against the replicators than in Unnatural Selection. -Memto-

I thought the alliance far predated the formation of the Goa'uld as a dominant race in the Milky Way.

[edit] Update

Well to get a few things straightened out the following things need to be understood: -The Alterans came first millions of years ago, and eventually settled in the Milky Way creating the stargates. -Sometime before 10,000 years ago they abandon our galaxy and move Atlantis to the Pegasus galaxy, while some Atlanteans ascend. -After they lose the war with the Wraith they sink Atlantis and flee to Earth through the Stargate or ascend. -The Dakara device is constructed and used to reestablish the more basic life in our galaxy for them. -Sometime after this the remaining Ancients on Earth form the alliance of the four great races that will rule the galaxy (consisting of the Ancients, Asgard, Nox and the Furling). -Due to the advanced nature of the Ancients well before the other three races, come into the universal picture (not quite so much the Asgard), it can clearly be seen that they are the dominant race and this has indeed been stated before on the show. -The Ancients possesed Time Dilation technology well before coming back to Earth, and they respected the other three races because of they advancement and higher understanding of the universe so giving them technology as such would certainly not be a problem. -In the season six episodes the devices obviously look Asgard, as they have survived alot longer than the Ancients and would have adapted any knowledge given to them into their own style of technology. -Whether or not the Asgard discovered this before they encountered the Ancients is irrelevant but most likely points to the other story seeing Thor did indeed have limited knowledge on the subject. -And the only reason they haven't used that technology before is because they didn't have the chance to get so many replicators together at once for it to be practical. Expecting Thor to be fluent with the finer nuances with every bit of technology at his disposal of access to is rather like expecting the Secretary of Defense of the United States to be familiar with the finer points of stealth technology. Lack of said knowledge doesn't, to me, mean the technology comes from aliens - it, to me, means that said individuals are to busy managing their resources to study any one technology in great depth.
