This image represents a space-time diagram of Minkowski space-time continuum with one dimension of space and the dimension of time. In this diagram 1 unit of space is the distance that light travels in 1 unit of time.
The individual frames of this animation are each a good representation of the physics of the procedure that is presented in the animation: Image:time_dilation_spacetime_diagram02.gif. Together the frames of this animation are a class of reference frames that all represent the physics taking place equally well.
