Holden is a town in Penobscot County, Maine, United States. The population was 2,827 at the 2000 census.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 32.1 square miles (83.2 km²), of which, 30.9 square miles (80.1 km²) of it is land and 1.2 square miles (3.1 km²) of it (3.71%) is water.

Holden is covered by Maine SAD 63, which includes Eddington, Maine and Clifton, Maine. Holden has two schools; an elementary school called Holden Elementary School and a middle school called Holbrook School (Maine)

As of the census2 of 2000, there were 2,827 people, 1,153 households, and 825 families residing in the town. The population density was 91.4 people per square mile (35.3/km²). There were 1,320 housing units at an average density of 42.7/sq mi (16.5/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 98.13% White, 0.18% African American, 0.53% Native American, 0.35% Asian, 0.14% Pacific Islander, 0.39% from other races, and 0.28% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.25% of the population.
There were 1,153 households out of which 31.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.9% were married couples living together, 7.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.4% were non-families. 22.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 2.88.
In the town the population was spread out with 24.0% under the age of 18, 5.7% from 18 to 24, 28.6% from 25 to 44, 30.7% from 45 to 64, and 11.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 100.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.9 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $51,394, and the median income for a family was $62,208. Males had a median income of $39,427 versus $26,410 for females. The per capita income for the town was $25,047. About 4.4% of families and 6.5% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.0% of those under age 18 and 9.2% of those age 65 or over.
