Holidays and Significant Dates of Japan There are many holidays in Japan, some people celebrate some and some people don’t depending on their beliefs. Some holidays like Culture Day is celebrated in schools and workplaces. Other holidays like The Flower Festival is celebrated at home with families. A very imporatant holiday is the Emperor’s Birthday. This holiday celebrates the current emperor’s birthday. Akihito, the emperor of Japan is born on December 23, 1933. Every year on December 23, a celebration takes place at the Imperial palace, lots of people crowd around the palace holding Japan flags. The emperor’s family and friends stand up on the palace and enjoy this celebration while they eat. Some people can enter the palace, but they cannot take food or drinks because non-family members eating in the palace shows disrespect. One f the biggest celebration of the year is New Years, the Japanese New Year is celebrated mostly on January 1st to the 3rd. Most Schools and workplaces close on December 29 – January 4 for kids to spend time with their families. On January 1st, families go to temples to pray longer lives for family members. After praying to the Buddha god, they go to someone’s house for a feast. A special dessert for the New Years is mochi (Japan-style rice cake). Gifts are exchanged during New Years to show love and respect. Houses are usually decorated with Japanese lanterns and people dress up in kimonos. Parents clean their houses to remove bad memories of the past and start new ones. Most schools do not give out homework during the New Years break so kids can spend time with their families without worrying about homework. Japanese lanterns are very traditional in Japanese New Year, people add them to their houses for decoration.
