Tierpark Berlin

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Tierpark Berlin is one of the two zoos in Berlin, Germany. It is located in Friedrichsfelde, on the former grounds of Friedrichsfelde Palace, which is situated within the zoo. At 160 hectares it is Europe's largest zoological garden. Today the zoo houses over 10,000 animals.[citation needed]

Founded in 1954, it is the former East Berlin pendant to Berlin Zoologischer Garten, located in Charlottenburg, then in West Berlin. In recent years the zoo has become famous for its successful elephant breeding programme. It is also one of the few zoos in Western Europe to keep muskoxen. The zoo also features two public exhibits which are free of charge, including the Bärenschaufenster (Bear Show Window) which houses the European Brown Bear.
