Tien (TV channel)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tien was the name of a commercial television channel in the Netherlands.
The channel was previously known as Talpa, the Latin word for mole (the animal), mol in Dutch, which refers to the surname of its founder, Dutch multi-millionaire John de Mol. Talpa currently holds the television rights to summaries of matches played in the Eredivisie, the Dutch top-flight football league. The live broadcasting rights were held by Versatel, another De Mol venture. "Tien" means ten in Dutch.
Tien had its official opening night on August 13, 2005. Between August 1 and then, it showed trailers of its future programmes. It use to broadcast only in the evenings, as it shared its channel with Nickelodeon. Since December 16, 2006, Nickelodeon went to The Box and Tien started broadcasting full days.
Recently, the assets of the Talpa Media have been sold to the RTL Nederland, which mean the end of the Tien television channel. RTL Nederland launches a new television channel under the name of RTL 8. Broadcasting rights for the Dutch football league, and the radio station Radio 538, which is leader in the Dutch radio market, also included in the deal. Tien was terminated on August 17, 2007.
