The tiento was developed for the vihuela (a lute-like instrument) before it became a standard organ form in the Iberian peninsula. Although the meaning of "falsas" given is etymologically correct, as used by Spanish organist writers of the 16th and 17th centuries it means no more than "suspensions". Tientos de falsas are rarely truly comparable to the Italian "durezze e ligature" style (meaning "dissonances and suspensions", not "consonance and dissonance" as stated).
