Vampirates: Tide of Terror, a novel by British author Justin Somper, is the follow up to Demons of the Ocean.

[edit] Plot Summary

After Leaving the vampirate ship, Connor and Grace return to the Diablo, Captain Molucco Wrathe's ship where Grace is welcomed warmly. Grace tries to explain to Connor the truth about the Vampirates and their way of life, but he refuses to believe the idea that they can be good. To the other crew, she doesn't talk about the matter, and is often left alone out of sympathy.

While Connor joins the crew in a raid, Grace sits in her cabin, and opens the vanity case Darcy gave her, as she goes through the items inside, she finds Lorcan's Claddagh ring, and puts it on the chain with the locket that Connor gave her. Darcy pays an astral visit, telling her the ship's in disarray as more of the crew follow Sidorio's example. Grace asks about Lorcan, but she simply shakes her head and disappears.

The raid turns out to be a trap led by another pirate crew, sparked by Mulocco's refusal to stick to his ship lane. The captain demands a one-on-one duel, to which Jez Stukely, a good friend of Connor's, rises to the challenge. He fights, but is fatally stabbed.

The crew hold a pirate's funeral before having the wake at Ma Kettle's. During this, Grace meets Cheng Li, who, after some discussion, suggests that Connor takes a break from his duties to spend a week at the Pirate Academy. Grace likes this idea because she doesn't want Connor to die because of Molucco's wanton ways. After some persuasion, Connor agrees to spend one week and gets permission from the Captain, who tells Cheng Li that she would never be able to corrupt 'pure gold' like the twins.

Pirate Academy offers a promising future for Connor, but Grace is not happy there where she realizes that there is no safe place in the pirate world. On top of this, she has seen through astral visitations that the Vampirate Ship has been having troubles in the form of those craving more blood than the captain is allowing. She sees three more Vampirates jumping ship this way.

Grace tells Cheng Li her problems and together they come up with a plan to get Grace back on the vampirate ship, leaving Connor to make his own choice about the future. But when Grace, attempting to get back on the Vampirate ship, jumps off the harbor wall into the ocean during a storm. Connor thinks she tried to kill herself and saves her from drowning so Grace ends up unconscious, in the care of the nurse at pirate academy.

Meanwhile Sidorio starts to build up his own crew of vampires when he finds the dead body of Jez who is turned in to a vampire. He is then joined by the other rebel vampires. Together they attack Mulocco's brother's ship.

Connor decides to stay at Pirate academy and decides to let Grace to make her own choice but when he goes to visit her he discovers that she's already returned to the Vampirate ship and what he can see is only a phantom. To celebrate his decision Connor and his new friend, Jacoby Blunt, preform a sword fighting display but Connor finds out it was a set up and refuses to stay at the academy. Just then Molucco turns up telling him to return to the ship, as they had heard that his brother's ship had been taken over and the original crew slaughtered. Connor gladly does so, when Cheng Li points out that he can't leave Grace, to which Connor gladly tells her that Grace is already gone.

The Diablo and her crew to go Ma Kettle's, where several captainsd have gathered to pay their respects and help. As they discuss tactics the Vampirate Captain tells him to use fire. Connor explains this and the captains go to discuss the tactic further. Connor tries to point out the Vampirate Captain to Bart, who for some reason cannot see him. Giving up Connor walks over to talk to him. The Captain comments that he was expecting Connor to be angry for taking his sister, to which Connor responds that he was at first, but has now realised that they both have their own paths to follow. The Captain praises him for his wisdom, when Connor asks how could he find the ship if he needed to, the response is simply to trust the tide, words that Connor heard in his father's voice.

The Captains follow Connor's plan to burn the ship but the attack is stopped when the pirates from the Diablo recognise Jez, but Connor remembers the Vampire Captains warning and leads the attack, destroying the ship.Yet as he throws more fire on he ship, Sidorio appears saying that fire will only make him stronger. He ten appears quickly as something else yet only for a second, then he disappears, and the Diablosails away.

Meanwhile Grace is told by the captain of the Vampirate ship - now revealed to us as The Nocturne - that they are traveling to a place called "Sanctuary" to meet the captain's guru, Mosh Zu Kamal, to see if he can heal Lorcan's blindness. Grace then meets Lorcan's donor and realizes to help him she must become his donor. Even so, Lorcan refuses, implying that he would never take Grace's blood. The book ends with Grace sharing Lorcan's cloak in his embrace as the two of them look out to the sea.
