==Welcome== Hello Thunk and welcome to Wikipedia! I'm glad you've chosen to join us. This is a great project with lots of dedicated people, which might seem intimidating at times, but don't let anything discourage you. Be bold!, explore, and contribute. If you want to learn more,

Wikipedia:Bootcamp teaches you the basics quickly,
Wikipedia:Tutorial is more in-depth, and
Wikipedia:Topical index is exhaustive.

Five Pillars of Wikipedia

Float around for awhile until you find something that tickles your fancy. One easy way to do this is to hit the random page button in the navigation bar to the left. There are also many great committees and groups that focus on particular jobs. My personal favorite stomping grounds are Wikipedia:Translation into English and Wikipedia:Cleanup for sloppy articles. Finally, the Wikimedia Foundation has several other wiki projects that you might enjoy.

There are a few crucial points to keep in mind when editing. Be civil with users, strive to maintain a neutral point of view, verify your information, and show good etiquette like signing your comments with four tildes like this: ~~~~ If you have any more questions, always feel free to ask me anything on my talk page or ask the true experts at Wikipedia:Help desk. Again, welcome! -- Draeco 00:22, 19 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Office of Surface Mining

I added some more to the Office of Surface Mining, I started reading the annual report, got through like page 50. I fixed some errors and such. I know that I stopped half-way through, I will finish it tomorrow or such. I also added a template, same as the National Park Service Template.

I found a lot of information in the OSM's annual report, it's divided up into like 6 sections, I found a lot of info in the intro and the section on regulation of mines.

[edit] IUCN Category

Thanks for your e-mail about Jewel Cave National Monument. For each protected area, you should first look in the World Database on Protected Areas (http://sea.unep-wcmc.org/wdbpa/), click on "Search for Sites" to the left. (Jewel Cave is shown as "III".) If it is not there, I then guess based the definitions (also on that website) and similar areas that have designations. However, the designation (such as State Park, National Monument, etc.), is never a guarantee of the IUCN designation. There are many examples of areas with the same national designation being in different IUCN categories.

When all else fails, my default mode is:

  • Wilderness areas: Ib
  • National parks: II
  • National monuments and world heritage sites: III
  • Wildlife refuges: IV
  • Battlefields, historic sites, seashores, recreation areas, state parks, etc.: V
  • National and state forests: VI

I also put a non-displaying note in the text of the article, just after the infobox, explaining my guess (see the code for Fort Raleigh National Historic Site).

Also, you can get visitation stats for NPS sites at: http://www2.nature.nps.gov/NPstats/select_report.cfm?by=year

One more thing, if you add the protected area infobox to an article, please also add the wikiproject tag to the articles talk page. Just cut and paste:

{{Messagebox protected areas}}

[edit] US GOV Agencies Wikiproject

Hi Thunk

I noticed that you have helped out with the Office of Surface Mining article, I was wondering if you would like to get involved with the WikiProject United States Government Agencies The goal of the project is to basically try to provide high quality articles on all the different agencies within the United States Government CuBiXcRaYfIsH 21:12, 24 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] MDM - Consultoria e Negócios Ltda.

I've speedy deleted, since it's substantially the same content. There is a trick for re-nominations, but I forget what it is. Rich Farmbrough. 10:05, 27 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Law-related Wikiprojects

Hello, Thunk. I noticed that your profile said you were a law professor, so I was just wondering if you would like to join WikiProject Law and WikiProject U.S. Supreme Court cases. Please let me know if you are interested, and sign your name on those project pages if you decide to join. I happen to be a 2nd year law student myself, and I can tell you that we could definitely use more lawyers around here.

Thanks, --Eastlaw 17:07, 18 April 2006 (UTC)
