Thuraya satellite phone

The Thuraya satellite phone is a satellite phone that American intelligence officials believe is widely used by Taliban and al Qaeda leaders.[1][2]

The Thuraya is capable of functioning as a GSM cell phone, in areas where it can detect a cell phone network.
