ThunderRidge High School opened in 1996 and began varsity athletic competition in the 1998-1999 school year. Since that time, the Grizzlies have won 18 state championships:

The Girls basketball team won three state championships. In 2003 both the boys and girls won the state championship at the Pepsi Center in Denver, Colorado. The basketball program has also produced multiple All-Americans: Abby Waner (Duke), Emily Waner (Duke), and Emily Fox (Minnesota). Matt Bouldin (Gonzaga) led the Grizzlies to two state championships in 2004, 2005 but never came away with the win. The boys went to the State Championship 4 straight years under Joe Ortiz 2002-2005, but only won 2002, 2003 defeating Wheat Ridge High School and Denver East, respectively.

The ThunderRidge football team has competed in 4A football until the 2007 season, but will start a 5A schedule in 2008. The team rarely misses the playoffs, and the Grizzlies went to the State Semi-Finals 5 years in a row under Coach Joe Johnson, 2001-2005 going 3-2, with a 3-0 record in state championship games. Since that time, however, the team has failed to advance past the second round of the playoff bracket. The most noteable recent seasons are 2004 when the Grizzlies went 12-2 and won the state championship. In 2005 with 19 returning starters on offense and defense the Grizzlies went 14-0 and beat Grand Junction High School at the first ever State Championship game played at Invesco Field at Mile High in Denver, Colorado and was named the number one team in the state.
