[edit] Think of Me deletion

When listing the articles included for deletion on the discussion page, I apparently forgot to include this article (Notes.../Prima Donna) as one of the articles up for deletion. I'm not sure what I should do at this point: if it can be deleted without debate, if I should nom for speedy deletion, or if I should go through the regular AfD process. -- MusicMaker5376 19:42, 20 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Advice needed

I want to ask for your advice on a new article i've created called the Great Northern Route. I decided to create this as it basically follows the suburban and outlying lines from Finsbury Park in London to stevenage via Welwyn Garden City (the main route) and a seperate route called the Hertford Loop which goes via Hertford to Stevenage. There is one branch which diverges onto the cambridge line and i have included letchworth as that is where many of the slow lines terminate. Anyway i have also included the line up to peterborough.

Anyway the whole route from Moorgate and Kings Cross to Stevenage via Welwyn GC and Hertford North and also to Cambridge and seperately to Peterborough - this is generally referred to as Great Northern for the whole route.

I was just wondering if i could have your opinion on this article and if you could also ask other people.

I chose route in the title as it incorporates a few lines.

Sorry to bother you. Simply south 22:30, 24 April 2006 (UTC)

BTW it is just a list of stations right now and would need a lot of improvement.

[edit] Are we Agreed?

Was there an agreement reached on the {{British TOCs}} template that I never heard about? It seemed to me that, given the discussion had gone quiet, everybody seemed ok with the idea of leaving NIR and Enterprise there, but with the {{Irish train operators}} left on those pages. If it's the case that this was agreed unacceptable then fair enough. However, if this isn't the case, then it seems that someone has reached an agreement on their own and proceeded to alter the British template YET AGAIN without consulting anyone. I realise you're probably getting bored silly with the whole template issue, but I've rejigged it (now that it's been unprotected) and included a note to say the Irish operators operate on the Irish network. [edit] Re: CmdrObot suggestion

Hi Chris,

Your request is an interesting one. Unfortunately I initally misread it as "search-and-destroy links from article X to article X", and went and did a little research based on that.

Curiously enough, I found about 25,000 articles with one or more self-links, and a total of over 29,000 self-links. Articles such as Stability Pact for South Eastern Europe, 1951 in comics, and Silverstone Circuit go completely overboard in this regard.

While using my bot before, I've noticed that quite a few articles seem to use self-links in the intro text to bold the article title (eg [[Alan Turing]] was a British mathematican... rather than '''Alan Turing''' was a British mathematican... Do you know if this is regarded as poor/deprecated usage?

As to your actual request (check for X links to Y when Y redirects to X), I'll have a look at it this evening. I'm not sure how easy it'll be to do. Do you think it's something that occurs often?

Cheers, Cmdrjameson 14:57, 15 May 2006 (UTC)

Hi again Chris, apologies for the long radio silence. It's doable alright. I've opted to analyse an offline dump of enwiki rather than using the 'what links here' as it fits better with the other work I've done. For now, I've generated a list of articles and the indirect self-links they contain. I've put some of them up at User:Cmdrjameson/X-to-Y-to-X if you'd like to take a look.

A few interesting factoids for you: enwiki-20060503 has just under 1.1M redirect articles. Of the 1.6M articles with anything other than a redirect in them, about 8200 have one or more links such that X-links-to-Y-redirects-to-X. All in all, there are about 13000 of these links.

A couple of these illustrate the kinds of problems that might pop up. The article 'Viewpoints Research Institute' redirects (incorrectly?) to 'Alan Kay', and 'Alan Kay' links back to VRI and mentions that he's the president of this company. Now arguably VRI should be a two line stub saying what VRI is and who runs it. However, the link in 'Alan Kay' should be neither bolded nor removed.

Another example is 'ISU notables', which redirects to 'Buildings of Iowa State University'. The latter article has many links of the form 'ISU notables#Hamilton_Hall'. Obviously this should be turned into the self-link '#Hamilton_Hall' rather than removing or bolding.

I'll look at this a little further over the weekend. Cheers, Cmdrjameson 23:54, 25 May 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Deletion of Intel processor confusion

Awhile ago, you closed the AfD for Intel processor confusion, the result given being "merge then delete". Before the close of the AfD, the article was changed significantly (basically, all of the old material was deleted and replaced with new material that satisfied most of the complaints in the AfD). Shortly after the AfD it was also renamed. Anyways, it hasn't been deleted, and I don't think it should be, but as the closing administrator, I thought you should know. (According to Guy Harris, "Of course, once the page is renamed, one could argue that the old "Intel processor confusion" page has, in effect, been deleted (its content was moved elsewhere, and no page has that name any more), and a new page, giving a summary of the family "brand names" Intel's using for various x86 processor lines, was created ab initio." [edit] Noncommercial-only image: Image:Class 171-cab.jpg

This image that you have uploaded is currently under a noncommercial-only licence. Such licences have been banned by Jimbo [3]. Hence either you should relicence it under any of the free licences listed in WP:ICT#Free licenses#For image creators or the image will have to be deleted. -- Paddu 19:31, 24 July 2006 (UTC)

While it has been uploaded before the cut-off, you still should change the license to something that is free, such as CC-BY-AB. Thank you. User:Zscout370 (Return Fire) 21:22, 24 July 2006 (UTC)
What happened is that long after Jimbo decided about the non-commercial images, there was a note placed on the upload page that if you or I upload a photo and we own the copyright, we have to use a free license or put in the public domain. I have no idea when this change was done, and I personally think what happened is that others were clearing those images out and happen to come onto yours, and since your still here on Wikipedia, we should try to and talk to you to see if you can change the license. What SPUI is trying to say is that what you used, while seems free, has a condition that for profit groups must ask permission for it to be used. That, in his view, is preventing some of our commercial mirrors, such as Answers.com, from using the image. This change to the license was done in Sept. of 2005 with the edit at [4]. So, while the placement at WP:PUI should have waitied by SPUI, I think that because of this condition, from you, that restricts commercial use of the image, the image license should be changed or it needs to be deleted from Wikipedia. I believe SPUI wants to give you the chance to change the license, and I feel that way too, but I want to hear from you of what you think. User:Zscout370 (Return Fire) 01:42, 25 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] re Wikipedia:Protecting children's privacy

Woah. You can't change an article to match your point of view and then protect it. There was no edit war over this page until you started it. Look, there are basically three editors who loathe this article versus more than a score who favor it. You did not and have not rebutted my arguments, so don't try to get your way be edit warring, OK? If you want to go to mediation on this I'm good with that. Would you like to that rather than editor warring? Herostratus 21:13, 19 September 2006 (UTC)

  • OK. I have not done mediation before. In order of formality there is (1) Third-Party Opinion, (2) Mediation Cabal, and (3) formal Mediation. I guess I'll contact the Mediation Cabal if that's OK. I don't know how fast they work, though. In the meantime I would suggest that "Proposed" is the most benign tag to leave up until a decision is made. If they Rejected tag is up that scares off any further editors and if left long enough becomes a de faco self-fulfulling tag, whereas it does no real harm to leave a Proposed tag up for a while longer. Herostratus 21:35, 19 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Privacy page

The discussion page has now been changed from a threaded discussion to two alphabetical lists of people where everyone is allowed one comment. Hi - could I point you towards this page as you have contributed to this list (& still are active). I think it could be improved but would rather have a wider range of views. If you are not interested sorry to bother you. Regards --Herby talk to me 10:19, 9 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] RfA thanks from StuffOfInterest

Thank you for participating in my RfA, which finished with a tally of 52/6/1 (~90%). It was an interesting process which gave me a chance to learn a bit about myself and about the community. My intention now is to slowly ease into using those additional buttons on my page. No use being over eager and mucking up the works. The support of all those who went over my record and/or rallied to my defense after the big oppose vote was instumental to the success of this review. Again, thank you! --StuffOfInterest 12:13, 10 October 2006 (UTC)
