"Throwing It All Away" is the seventh track on the 1986 album Invisible Touch by Genesis. It was issued as the fifth and last single from the album in 1987, reaching #4 on the Billboard Hot 100[1] (having peaked at #1 on Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks the previous December[2]) and a modest #22 in Britain.
The US single included the instrumental "Do the Neurotic" as the B-side, while the UK edition featured the track "I'd Rather Be You", originally intended as a single in its own right. ("Do the Neurotic" was the B-side of the earlier single "In Too Deep" in Britain.)
The CD version of the Invisible Touch album incorrectly lists the running time as 4 minutes and 41 seconds (4:41), when the correct time is actually 3 minutes and 50 seconds (3:50).
"Throwing It All Away" was played live on the Invisible Touch, We Can't Dance and Turn It On Again tours, though always transposed down a key to account for the deepening of Phil Collins's voice over the years. A video for the song was comprised of soundcheck footage and shots of the band traveling whilst on tour.
