[edit] Plot summary
Firekeeper only vaguely remembers a time when she didn't live with her 'family', a pack of 'royal wolves' -- bigger, stronger, and smarter than normal wolves.
Now, after years of this upbringing, a group of humans have come into the woods west of the Iron Mountains. This expedition, led by Norvin Norwood (aka: Earl Kestrel), along with Doc and Derian Carter, the wolves are sending her back to human society. Along with her pack mate Blind Seer, the two wolves travel with the humans to their kingdom of Hawk Haven, learning some Pellish along the way.
Now, trapped within the confines of human society, Firekeeper struggles to get along while vying for the heir to the throne of Hawk haven demand her attention. Being thought the daughter of the King's disowned son Prince Barden doesn't help either. Just when everything seems to become a disaster, a new force of Alister Seagleam enters the fray, being the King's nephew.
After many meetings and dances to gain knowledge, one of Bright Bay's allies, Stonehold, decides to declare war on them while the decisions are taking place. King Tedric, despite many arguments, decides to help their old enemies and defend Bright Bay, for if Alister Seaglem gains Heir for the kingdom, their countries will be united again.
Lady Zorana, however, is kidnapped by two men, and during a night time prowl, easily planned, Firekeeper steal her back with her.
During this time, Firekeeper, Derian, and Doc (Sir Jared), along with the new ally Lady Archer (Elise), free Sapphire Shield from her mother's sorcerous control, something outlawed in both Bright Bay and Hawk Haven. Elise, who had also been under slight control after her engagement to Melina's son Jet, break her control.
When the war finally breaks out, Elise and Doc are sent to work in their field hospital for their known excellence in the healing arts. During this time Elise develops a crush on him, despite his lesser rank. Derian, along with a specially selected group travel behind enemy lines to destroy supplies. Firekeeper, who had been left out of the main fight, for fear she would hurt their men more than the enemies, and out of the sabotage for that blind Seer would scare the horses, finds a hidden archer as he betrays them and kills one of the head generals. She ties him up, and decides to go report to King Tedric. Rushing in with what seems like anger, Zorana shoots Firekeeper in the leg with an arrow. She continues into the tent to find Prince Newell trying to kill the king. She fights him, and Zorana entering thinks she is betraying them, calling for backup. Firekeeper manages to kill the traitor Newell, but get a stab in the back, having the last thing she hears being the low moaning howl of Blind Seer.
Blind Seer and Elation (a peregrine falcon that accompanied them for a bit, of the royal kind) race out to find Derian and Elise, as well as Doc. They drag them to the tent, where King Tedric has recovered from the almost heart attack and tells them what happened. Elise and Doc work on healing her, while Derian helps everyone calm down.
While Firekeeper remains unconscious, Alister and Tedric continue on the discussion of whether he would become Heir. Alister convinces his Queen to make him King of Bright Bay, or else she would have had an uprising for her denial of the war, and agrees with Tedric to marry his oldest son Shad to a girl that Tedric chooses, making a pack of truce with the two countries. Tedric formally adopts Sapphire Shield into his family and they are to marry. Valora takes control of the Isles and leaves. When Firekeeper awakens, she finds that Elise had broker her marriage alliance with Jet, and learns of the kingdom's alliance, and how later it would become Bright Haven.
When the group finds all of them invited to the wedding of Shad and Sapphire, they all agree. Firekeeper seems worried that she will never return to her pack, Earl Kestrel let her know that she will be allowed to, she decides to stay with them until after winter.
