Template talk:Three Kingdoms

[edit] Usage:
Under Construction
This template employs a relatively large set of parameters. However, almost all of these can be safely omitted (see Minimal Specification, below).
{{Three Kingdoms |SC= |TC= |PY= |WG= |Kingdom= |Rank= |Image= |Caption= |StyleName1= |StyleNameTrans1= |StyleName2= |StyleNameTrans2= |StyleName3= |StyleNameTrans3= |PostName= |PostNameTrans= |BuddhismName1= |BuddhismName2= |BuddhismName1= |DeityName1= |DeityNameTrans1= |DeityName2= |DeityNameTrans2= |DeityName3= |DeityNameTrans3= |TempleName1= |TempleName2= |EraName1= |EraNameDate1= |EraName2= |EraNameDate2= |EraName3= |EraNameDate3= |EraName4= |EraNameDate4= |EraName5= |EraNameDate5= |EraName6= |EraNameDate6= |OtherName1= |OtherNameTrans1= |OtherName2= |OtherNameTrans2= |OtherName3= |OtherNameTrans3= |OtherName4= |OtherNameTrans4= |OtherName5= |OtherNameTrans5= |OtherName6= |OtherNameTrans6= |ReignStart= |ReignEnd= }}
- Minimal specification
- Only the first four parameters (SC, TC, PY and WG) are mandatory. These four represent Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Pinyin and Wade-Giles, respectively. This usage follows that of templates superseded by this one. Thus {{Three Kingdoms}} yields precisely what is visible on the template page: {{Three Kingdoms}}.
- Optional parameters
- Many of the parameters are specific to Emperors. These include:
-
- ReignStart
- ReignEnd
- EraName1 through EraName6
[edit] Discussion
There are some problems I see with this template, and I would suggest holding off the mass switch until we deal with the issues:
- Categorizing the people by their rank and their kingdom is not very workable, since much of the time these are not very clear cut. Zhuge Liang, for example, spent the later part of his life being a full regent instead of an advisor. Other examples include: Man Chong is both a general and advisor, Mi Fang is first from Shu then defected to Wu, Cao Cao is first a general, then a prime minister, a duke, a king, etc.
- Calling the three contenders "kingdoms" is really misleading, since they are not really kingdoms but full-fledged empires.
- This template would leave out forces like Yuan Shao, Dong Zhuo, Ma Teng, and the like.
- ....personally, I don't like the colour.
My suggestion is to crop all the extraneous information except the names, and....make the template blue and white again (maybe except for emperors) _dk 23:26, 27 May 2007 (UTC)
- So in other words, scrap the template. ;-P.
- The colors can be changed (if everyone else agrees) the Rank parameters can be left unpopulated on each article page pending further discussion. If you remove |Rank=G or |Rank=E from the article page, then the template simply says "Three Kingdoms era" (the top line is omitted). Try it. Ling.Nut 23:33, 27 May 2007 (UTC)
- PS we can use the highest rank each person attained. As for Kingdom versus Empire, you'll have o do a Move on the article Kingdom of Wei, won't you?Ling.Nut 23:36, 27 May 2007 (UTC)
- I don't think yelling "Three Kingdoms era" at the readers at the top of the page is necessary. The Du Fu article doesn't have things like "Poet of the Tang Dynasty", and Qin Shihuang doesn't have "Emperor of the Qin Dynasty" on it.

- Ugh, the table on Qin Shihuang is particularly unsightly. I'm... surprised. Negatively.
- If you think "Three Kingdoms era" is being shouted, it's a trivial matter to reduce the font size. :-)
- If you think the word "Kingdom" should be replaced by "Empire" then it's a trivial matter to do that as well.
- In fact, it's pretty easy to change anything.
- Hey what the heck, I'll change the colors for you... Ling.Nut 23:58, 27 May 2007 (UTC)
- Changed to blue; changed "Kingdom" to Empire"; reduced font size. -- Ling.Nut 00:34, 28 May 2007 (UTC)

- Hm, the same "unsightly" table is also on Emperor Gao of Han, Emperor Wu of Han, Qianlong, Emperor Xian of Han, and just about every other Chinese emperor article I see. You might want to bring the concern up to WP:CHINA. By the way, I'm saying that the header text should be eliminated for the template..but that's only my preference and is open to discussion. _dk 00:49, 28 May 2007 (UTC)
(undent) Well then, yukiness runs rampant. :-) I'll say something on WT:CHINA... Ling.Nut 01:11, 28 May 2007 (UTC)
