Talk:Threatened fauna of Australia
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
[edit] More clarification required.
Just came across this article. While the objective is good, there are a couple of queries or concerns I have:
1. The categorisation. The article obviously is using the IUCN categories, in that Critically Endangered is mentioned. However the IUCN prefers to talk about Threatened species, and then classifies them into Critically Endangered, Endangered, and Vulnerable. Any species in any of these categories might be regarded as "endangered" to the lay person. In addition there is the category "Near Threatened", within which are a number of species in decline. One answer would be to retitle the article "Threatened Fauna of Australia" and redirect "Endangered Australian Fauna" here. Then "Vulnerable" species could be added, if not near threatened also.
2. The definition. This is stated as: endangered ... means that the population of animals is so small that it is in danger of becoming extinct. This is not the case. Size of population can be a factor, but far more important under the IUCN classifications is the rate of decline. I'd be happy to write an explanation, appropriately referenced, however this would only be confusing unless the point above is also attended to.

- As it is now about two weeks, and no-one has commented, I propose to make the move to "Threatened Australian Fauna" tonight. --Michael Johnson 00:24, 13 November 2006 (UTC)
Australia has its own list of endangered species and this list uses the EPBC Act as its source since IUCN classifications have no relevance to how conservation works in Australia; the threatened v species on the EPBC list are not even included on this page, so moving the page to threatened species of Australia would be quite silly. --Peta 00:30, 13 November 2006 (UTC)
Now you have me totally confused - if this is not an EPBC list nor an IUCN list what is it? --Michael Johnson 00:52, 13 November 2006 (UTC)
- This is the EPBC list - as far as endangered, nobody has bothered to add all the endangered species; there are still the vulnerable species to be added. The EPBC does use the umbrella term threatened fauna; if the page is moved, get the capitalisation right - it should be Threatened fauna of Australia. --Peta 01:12, 13 November 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Clarification of a different kind
While I appreciate most land fauna is unique to Australia, marine and air fauna often isn't. Can the article differentiate between creatures endangered in Australia but found elsewhere, and those not?
[edit] Move
Have moved to Threatened fauna of Australia. Will add some more infomation regarding categories later. --Michael Johnson 02:00, 16 November 2006 (UTC)
