[edit] An Evening with Fred Astaire
Hi Thomprod, thanks for the info regarding AEWFA. (I was on a Wikibreak in a place where I had access only to a painfully slow dial-up, so no Wikipedia for me.) I'll definitely check that out when I'm in NYC next time -- do you know if they had any other ancient videotapes? How was the picture quality? Regards, ProhibitOnions (T) 22:54, 4 July 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks for the reply, PO. The Museum has many old programs, including some kinescopes that have been copied to video. I was told their viewing copies are Hi-8mm video tape dubs and the originals are kept in a vault outside of New York City. The quality of the copies is quite good, although it's easy to see the limitations of the early cameras and recording equipment. I have viewed the musical productions of "Cinderella" (1957) and "Peter Pan" (1960) and lots of US programs from the 1950s and 60s. Regards.Thomprod 13:16, 5 July 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Filmmaking list
Hey, it's no problem! But there's nothing particularly arcane either - just insert it into the right place in the text without deleting what's already there. Look forward to your edits! Girolamo Savonarola 02:13, 6 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Wizard of Oz
That was Hamilton on the broomstick flying outside the window. Dorothy's song indicates that was the witch she saw out her window, the witch of the east, upon whom the house fell. Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? 13:59, 13 December 2007 (UTC)
- The article Wicked Witch of the East discusses this issue in more depth. There is an "original research" tag, but nearly everything in the article is verifiable from the film itself, which is its own source. Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? 14:45, 13 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Thanks for the advice...
...to visit the Paley Center in NY, which I did a couple of weeks ago. I had a look at The Edsel Show and An Evening with Fred Astaire and several other oldies. My only gripe was that these were all B/W kinescope copies, and most of the staff, with the possible exception of the head librarian, didn't seem to know what the difference was between a videotape and a kine, or why this was important. In other words, it's an excellent place if you're interested in programming, but the technical side of things seems to be a bit neglected. Even so, I had a great time. [edit] Userboxes
Hello, Thomprod
You didn't have to ask permission to use the userboxes, i created them precisely for that; to be used by all Wikipedians. Not only you can use them, as you are welcome to use them. I'm happy you liked some of the boxes i created. If there's anything you like here, just pick, you can use them as you like. Enjoy it and happy editing.
--Bluedenimtalk 19:13, 11 March 2008 (UTC)
- I saw your request on gingko100's and was coming here to let you know that you do not have to ask for permission to use any user box utilized on wikipedia. As part of the user agreement to use wikipedia, one agrees to license everything under the GLDF---which ensures free access to the material presented here. Whoever told you otherwise was wrong and depending on what was said and how it was said should be advised of such.Balloonman (talk) 04:14, 12 March 2008 (UTC)
- PS a Gingko100 is my better half... if you feel as if you need permission... have no fear... she is part of a group that specifically hosts user boxes for people to use.Balloonman (talk) 04:22, 12 March 2008 (UTC)
- Like the above stated, permission isn't required to use a userbox unless there's a big sign that says "DO NOT USE". --The Dark Side (talk) 15:03, 12 March 2008 (UTC)

- Thank you all for your replies. My hesitation was based on this sentence found on WP:UBX#Using existing userboxes: "It may be considered uncivil to place any userboxes on any other user's page(s) without their permission." I appreciate the reassurance that the copying was acceptable, but perhaps the "guideline" should be changed to reflect this? Thomprod (talk) 17:13, 12 March 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Reread the guideline
It may be considered uncivil to place any userboxes on any other user's page(s) without their permission. In other words, it may be uncivil for me to place a user box on your talk page (or vice versa). What it is saying, is say you are Catholic but you don't have the "Catholic User" user box on your talk page. It may be uncivil of me to place that box on your page without your permission because you may not want it. OR suppose you are Catholic, and I placed a "Baptist User" user box on your page. Or how about something political? Or sports related? (Better not put a Yankee box on my page!) Or sexual? It isn't saying that you can't use somebody else's user box, it is just saying, don't place a user box on another person's talk/user page without their permission.Balloonman (talk) 17:45, 12 March 2008 (UTC)
- I understand now. I took the phrase on any other user's page(s) to include my own. Thanks for straightening me out. Thomprod (talk) 18:40, 12 March 2008 (UTC)
- As a general rule, it is considered impolite to edit another person's user or talk page (beyond making comments.) For example, I may want to Archive a person's talk page because I think it is too long, but it isn't my place to log another person's talk page. I may think a page looks nicer if it was edited in a certain way, but it wouldn't be polite to make any formatting/design changes without permission.Balloonman (talk) 19:25, 12 March 2008 (UTC)
