Thorpe Marsh Power Station

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Thorpe Marsh Power Station was a 1 GW coal-fired power station near Doncaster, South Yorkshire, England.

Commissioned in 1959, it was built as a prototype for all the modern power stations in the UK. The station opened in 1963. It contained 2 generating sets powered by coal, and having a Gas Turbine set using an industrial (static) version of a Rolls-Royce Avon (aero engine), of 14.9 Mw capacity.

The station has been closed since 1994, but only its cooling towers, Hoppers and adjacent electricity switching station still remain. (switching station was nearly flooded during 2007, Yorkshire flood, which would have knocked the grid out according to news reports).
