Thornton Township is a township located in Cook County, in the state of Illinois. Incorporated in 1850, it is the most populous township in Illinois as of the 2000 census.[citation needed] It is located immediately south of Chicago, Illinois. The population was 180,802 at the 2000 census. The percentage of the population made up by racial and ethnic minorities, as well as senior citizens, whose population has been increasing.
The village of South Holland, Illinois serves as the governmental seat of Thornton Township. The township is named after the village of Thornton, Illinois, located in the south central portion of the township. Many parts of the township carry names inspired by the village's name, including the three high schools of Thornton Township District 205: Thornton Township High School in Harvey, Illinois; Thornwood High School in South Holland, Illinois; and Thornridge High School in Dolton, Illinois. Supervisor Frank M. Zuccarelli was voted Supervisor of the year in 2007 by the Township Officials of Illinois for his outstanding service to the residents of Thornton Township.

Thornton Township is bordered by Western Avenue on the west, 135th Street on the north, the Indiana state line on the east, and 183rd Street on the South.
To the north of Thornton Township is the city of Chicago and Calumet Township, to the west is Bremen Township, to the south is Bloom Township, and to the east is Lake County, Indiana.
