Thornham is a small district overlapping both Royton and Rochdale in Greater Manchester, England.[1] The area is found at the border of the Metropolitan Borough of Oldham and the Metropolitan Borough of Rochdale, and in this capacity is divided at a constituency and electoral ward level.[2]

Thornham was formerly known as Gravel Hole, due to its mass pits of gravel. To this day, many maps still refer to Thornham by this name.

In former times, Thornham formed a significant part of the parish of Middleton.

Thornham is served by "Thornham St. James Cof E Primary School" (which lies within the border of Royton and is thus administered by Oldham L.E.A) and "St John's CE Primary Thornham" (which lies within Rochdale, and thus administered by Rochdale L.E.A.[3]

Thornham has good transport links with Oldham and Rochdale with the A671 running through the area between the two towns. First Manchester's 409 services runs along this road between Rochdale and Ashton-under-Lyne via Oldham. First also provides bus services to Manchester with the 24 running between Rochdale and Manchester via Royton and Chadderton and the 20 peak time express service between Bacup and Manchester via Rochdale, Royton and Chadderton.
