The civil parish is formed by the village of Thorngumbald and the hamlets of Camerton and Ryehill. According to the 2001 UK census, Thorngumbald parish had a population of 3,106.[1]

The parish church of St Mary is a Grade II listed building.

The unusual name is derived from the word Thorn, designating a thorn bush, and the name Gumbaud, the family name for the local Lord of the manor in the 13th century.[2]
