Thorláksmessa
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Thorláksmessa (also known as "Þórlaksmessadagur" or "The Mass of St. Thorlákur") is an Icelandic holiday celebrated on December 23. Icelanders eat rotten skate and potatoes on this day, and buy Christmas presents. The odor of rotten skate is quite strong.
Thorláksmessa is a celebration in honor of Thorlákur Thórhallsson, who was appointed as the patron saint of Iceland in 1985, centuries after his death on December 23, 1193.
