Thore Christian Elias Fries

Thore Christian Elias Fries (1886-1930)[1] was a son of Thore M. Fries and Robert Elias Fries brother. Professor of Systematic Botany at Lund University. At first he mainly studied lichenology but later turned to plant geography. As such he became one of the pioneers and leaders in the area of plant sociology. Thore C. E. travelled in India and Africa and died during a field trip to the "Capland" (South Africa) and Rhodesia.[2]
A Swedish botanist who was a member of the British Mycological Society and involved with The Botanical Museum (UPS), Botanic Garden and Botanical Museum Berlin-Dahlem, Natural History Museum (BM), The Bolus Herbarium (BOL), the National Botanic Garden of Belgium (BR), National Museums of Kenya, East African Herbarium (EA), Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew (K), Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle (P), South African National Biodiversity Institute, National Herbarium, Pretoria (PRE), the Swedish Museum of Natural History Department of Phanerogamic Botany (S) and the National Herbarium and Botanic Garden (SRGH), Zimbabwe.[3]
A collector of plants from 1902 through 1931 in Europe: Sweden; Tropical Africa: Kenya; and died while on an expedition to Southern Africa: South Africa, Zimbabwe[3] in Umtali. The route followed was from Port Elizabeth to Cape Town, across the Karoo and Orange Free State to Rhodesia.[4]
