Thomson is a Scottish and English patronymic surname meaning "son of Thom, Thomp, Thompkin, or other diminutive of Thomas", itself dervied from the Aramaic תום or Tôm, meaning "twin". It is an alternate of Thompson, and there are many other spelling variations. Thomson is uncommon as a given name.[1][2][3]
